So I go to the bank to deposit a check, and I park in the lot that's closest to the ATM. It's always empty, and I've parked there before, never more than the time it takes to use the ATM. Anyway, I walk about 30 feet to the ATM, deposit a check, walk 30 feet back, and the guy's writing me a ticket 🙁

I try to plead my case, but obviously he's having none of it. Oh well. The guy must have been waiting for me or something...I've never gotten a ticket that FAST.

I've never gotten a private parking ticket before...unlike the City of Seattle ones, there's no way to appeal. It's just a receipt that has my license #, the fine, and not much else.

I almost wonder what their legal backing is...if I were to skip paying the ticket, could they prove I was parked there? It seems unlikely. However, I really don't want to risk dealing with a collections agency for $30, so I guess I'll just pay it now. *sigh*.🙁
 
The officer writing you a ticket is enough. He was the witness. If it's a police officer's word against yours over something like this, the police officer will win.

If you don't pay it, they'll report it to the DMV, who will check your registration and suspend the driver's license of whomever the car is registered to. That's what they do in Virginia, anyway. Not that I'd know...

I'd recommend paying it.
 
30 dollars holy crap! thats awesome!

last year i got a ticket here in NYC for 115 stopping at a no standing zone, and then i plead not guilty trying to fight it. i lost, i paid, now they slap me with a penalty of 30 dollars!

my penalty = your ticket!

if there's a hotdeal for getting a ticket, that would be it.
 
The fact they have your plate # and their employee as a witness if often proof enough-- they probably also wrote down your car make and model on the form they keep.

Some of the larger parking lot owners will have an agreement with the city or county government they are located in to have their tickets given the same weight as any issued by a peace officer (usually done in exchange for the company managing the city of county lots free of charge).

Could be, but he's probably just talking about average downtown parking lot which is owned by a private company for general parking where you have to pay before you leave.
 
Are you a fatty? Maybe you should get a handicap tag like all the fatties out there, which permits you to park almost anywhere w/o penalty.
 
I almost got a ticket for parking in the handicapped spot at the post office in college - of course no parking around and it literally took 30 seconds to go in and out to get my mail. Fortunately the guy had sympathy for me and let me go.
 
My local bank has 2 handicap parking spaces next to the ATM and cops know people are too lazy to park another 5 feet away in the empty parking lot. The cops will stakeout the place and give out ticket to unsuspected victims. I am always tempted to warn them but f them.

I worked downtown. It was impossible to find parking, so rather then pay 15.00 for parking, I just got the 10.00 ticket for parking illegally everyday.

"Officer"? This wasn't a city ticket, it was some random grunt who wrote it.

I just don't like how there's no option to contest, or mitigate...the ticket just assumes you're guilty, and will forward you to collections for nonpayment...and yet they let any old 20 year old with an axe to grind write them. Heck, you could forge them with one of those ticker tape printers, and give them out yourself.

The City tickets are much more professional.

I don't want to get taken for a ride, but I REALLY want to avoid dealing with collections agencies...they're not even human. I suppose SOMEONE has to employ parolled Mafia muscle, but...
 
Yeah....pay and get it over with. Sorry to hear about the parking Nazis getting you.

We have a parking guy here that stands around behind trees waiting for people to park in handicapped spots and fire lanes. I mean, he literally stands around waiting for someone to park illegally. I think he's retarded or something. I really wish he would quit his job....I believe his practices to be unethical and unhelpful.

Of course, I do understand that people he writes tickets usually deserve it. I just hate to see the idiot standing behind trees....it's creepy.

How is it unethical? He's not making people park somewhere they otherwise wouldn't. How is it unhelpful? The only way people will stop parking illegally is if they have some disincentive to do so. If he just jumped out from behind his tree and told them to move somewhere else, they'd continue to park there because there's no punishment. He actually is being helpful by being vigilent.

Exactly! I don't even see how they could send it to a collection agency since you have no contract with them. The only way I know of for private lots to get money from people parked in them is to either collect it on exit or have the lot marked with tow signs so they can hold your car hostage until you pay.
 
Private tickets are enforcable because of local laws that give parking lot owners special leeway in writing out private tickets. In fact, putting your car on their property is often an implicit contract that is fully enforcable by the civil courts.

Often, they can get information from the DMV using your plate information, and use the resulting name, address, and SS number to report you to a collection agency.

They sure can't do that here. When I lived in a townhouse the HOA looked into what they could do to keep people from parking in peoples assigned spaces and the answer turned out to be not much. The homeowner could call and have the vehicle towed but they were then wide open to whatever legal action the owner might choose to take. If the HOA issued "tickets" there was no legal way to force payment.
