This is my first thread in P&N, so please be gentle with me folks 😀
I am a H1 worker. I received my undergrad and masters degree here in the states. I believe that I am a productive CA resident that helps the state and country by paying taxes, SSN and medicare. Heck, basically for SSN and medicare, I am paying for something that I will probably NEVER use.. but I have to pay it anyways
The US government is currently doing all they can to stop people like me staying in the states. Getting the H1 work permit is already hard enough. I had to find a company that wanted to sponsor me, and spend around $5k in lawyer and applications fees, and basically they made me jump through hoops. They cut down the H1 quota to a pittance, practically making it almost impossible for international people to get a job here in the states. Basically you have to be that GOOD for a company to actually hire you and fork over the expenses to get you a H1. Also its not only money, the company is also risking legal jeopardy by sponsoring you, which all incents them NOT to hire international people/students, while IMO some of them are much more qualified, especially in engineering and technical fields.
Even after you get the H1, you only get that for 3 years, and you can renew it for another 3 years, after that you pretty much have to get a green card, which IMO is almost impossible to get. If a company wishes to sponsor you for a green card, they have to fork over about $10k, and the process takes at least 2-3 years to finish. A lot of people leave the states because they cant get a greencard, IMO this is dumb since basically the US is losing a PRODUCTIVE resident that is already paying good taxes.. and helping the American Economy
I cringe on how the US gov is currently wasting tens of thousands of green card each year in their so called lottery program. Yes please give a green card to a farmer in south east asia, who does not even speak English, while that green card can be given to any h1 worker that WANTS to stay in the US and already a productive resident.
IMO the US gov got it all wrong. The h1 quota should be limitless. People are talking how all the jobs are outsourced to India and China. However these are generally lower skill jobs. The US should counter this trend by hiring smarter and higher skill/education/techinal people and entice them to live in the States.
I read somewhere that most master degrees in engineering and technical fields are dominated by international people. These are the very people that the US are rejecting by illogical immigration laws.
Some people would say the US gov is protecting their current citizens, so they wont lose their jobs. They would argue that the corporations are paying less money for these international workers, but this is simply not true. When you apply for a h1, your wage has to be the prevailing wage for your position, so your h1 would be rejected if the company hires you for less wage. Even more, the companies also have to prove that they TRIED to hire a us citizen, but they simply can't, so they have to hire this international person.
H1 workers should be given a green card after a couple of years of working in the states. They are already paying taxes, a productive member of the society. Currently the gov is making a big fuss on trying to give the illegal immigrants some sort of legality so they can tax them. Current h1 workers ALREADY pay taxes, and somehow this issue is not even on the radar.
