I feel bad for the H1 workers in the United States

z0mb13

Lifer
This is my first thread in P&N, so please be gentle with me folks 😀

I am a H1 worker. I received my undergrad and masters degree here in the states. I believe that I am a productive CA resident that helps the state and country by paying taxes, SSN and medicare. Heck, basically for SSN and medicare, I am paying for something that I will probably NEVER use.. but I have to pay it anyways

The US government is currently doing all they can to stop people like me staying in the states. Getting the H1 work permit is already hard enough. I had to find a company that wanted to sponsor me, and spend around $5k in lawyer and applications fees, and basically they made me jump through hoops. They cut down the H1 quota to a pittance, practically making it almost impossible for international people to get a job here in the states. Basically you have to be that GOOD for a company to actually hire you and fork over the expenses to get you a H1. Also its not only money, the company is also risking legal jeopardy by sponsoring you, which all incents them NOT to hire international people/students, while IMO some of them are much more qualified, especially in engineering and technical fields.

Even after you get the H1, you only get that for 3 years, and you can renew it for another 3 years, after that you pretty much have to get a green card, which IMO is almost impossible to get. If a company wishes to sponsor you for a green card, they have to fork over about $10k, and the process takes at least 2-3 years to finish. A lot of people leave the states because they cant get a greencard, IMO this is dumb since basically the US is losing a PRODUCTIVE resident that is already paying good taxes.. and helping the American Economy

I cringe on how the US gov is currently wasting tens of thousands of green card each year in their so called lottery program. Yes please give a green card to a farmer in south east asia, who does not even speak English, while that green card can be given to any h1 worker that WANTS to stay in the US and already a productive resident.

IMO the US gov got it all wrong. The h1 quota should be limitless. People are talking how all the jobs are outsourced to India and China. However these are generally lower skill jobs. The US should counter this trend by hiring smarter and higher skill/education/techinal people and entice them to live in the States.

I read somewhere that most master degrees in engineering and technical fields are dominated by international people. These are the very people that the US are rejecting by illogical immigration laws.

Some people would say the US gov is protecting their current citizens, so they wont lose their jobs. They would argue that the corporations are paying less money for these international workers, but this is simply not true. When you apply for a h1, your wage has to be the prevailing wage for your position, so your h1 would be rejected if the company hires you for less wage. Even more, the companies also have to prove that they TRIED to hire a us citizen, but they simply can't, so they have to hire this international person.

H1 workers should be given a green card after a couple of years of working in the states. They are already paying taxes, a productive member of the society. Currently the gov is making a big fuss on trying to give the illegal immigrants some sort of legality so they can tax them. Current h1 workers ALREADY pay taxes, and somehow this issue is not even on the radar.

I'm in total agreement with you. It's nothing but fear of diversity that's keeping H1 workers from becoming permanent residents.

Advanced Degree cap for 2006 reached already.

exactly my point..

lots of international students are forced to go back home because of this very reason.

they WANT to work here, but its very hard to get the work permit

Agreed, it is like luck of the draw to go to school in the states. That leaves me with Chineese engineering schools (of the future of course) and European (CERN) Universities. It is almost tempting to jump across the border, work, get a temp work Visa, work some more, apply for a green card, or join the army and go over to Iraq to try and get citenzhip so I don't have to go through the hoop of H1. /rant

I snipped everything that was BS in your post.

More importantly, your claim that the jobs that are being offshored are "lower skill" jobs particularly reaks. Im not anti-immigration at all, but you come off sounding like you work for the Bush Admin. Congrats.

No I blame you for complaining about a system that gave you opportunity to come here, get a decent education and then whine about the rules still not suiting YOUR needs.

So you feel no resposibility to go back to your country and to try and help them get a better life? It seems to me it's all about you and ypou chastize someone for worrying that your better life might mean a worse life for him?

What about your family, you don't care about them or do you want to move all of them here also?

My needs? yes my needs, but tens of thousands of other workers feel the same way..

you must be one of those protectionists...

While this used to be true in the past, the trend is fast changing, you have more and more companies setting up R&D in India

its all about free market and capitalizm.. a person or resource that can do a better job is preferred here. The US is not one of those socialist countries where you can do ****** on your job and still get paid.

Face it, thousands of jobs in those car manufacturing counties are GONE. you have to be skilled in what you do, not hoping on any union to bail you out.

Yes I care about my family, I want to bring them here if I could.

I am chasing the american dream.

well that was a personal attack rather than disputing my argument.

State WHY you dont think h1 workers should get permanent residence. The only answers would be protectionist of nature...

I'm in total agreement...educated people should still have a place here. In the end they bring money here, they develop products, nuture ideas. And if you have enough high skilled labor in the States, then they'll need the unskilled labor to support them. If you talk to companies going to China and India, their main complaint after corruption is how difficult it is to get the skilled managers and idea people. It's win-win for everybody. This should be a no brainer. But hey our immigration policy has never made sense, feast or famine for 200 years.

If you consider software development, accounting, research & development, business administration, medical diagnosis, financial analytics, IT, paralegals, medical technicians, etc to be "lower skill" then fine, we agree. Hey, did you know that nearly all the big US R&D firms either increased or opened operations in either India or China in the last 5 years?

Meh, such is life, the US will shut out good engineers, doctors ect, allowing poor mexicans in to pick tobacco and cotton, than in 15 years, when Asia, Europe, and the ME (if they are still around) are surpassing them in Engineering, ect, they will cry and wonder what went wrong.

Too much red tape here for R&D firms.

what advanced skills do you have that we should make you a citizen and allow you to compete with a person that was born in the USA?

Under this current adminstration? Yes. it is more expensive (fewer profits == bad; no CEO bonus == bad) to pay and sponsor a H1, than it is to offshore the same job to India or China. Do you not understand this logical conclusion?
