I wouldn't feel bad about returning an FM transmitter that cost me $135. If you had gone to the damn CD player section you could have picked up a SoundFeeder for all of $20. What's more, the car version even comes with a universal DC adapter built into the unit.

I work at a Best Buy. There is no problem with returning an item within the thirty day return policy, even it it works fine. The store will just tape the package up and take ten percent off the price. All the iPod accessories have a 200 percent markup anyway, so Best Buy is not losing money. You did not do anything wrong.
