I failed a class, but I actually didn't.

I go to SUNY Stony Brook, and the transcript said I failed a class. Its a complicated sittuation because I missed 4 classes, but I handed in the work for those classes. The recitation teacher also told me to present a doctor's note for those classes I missed, which I did. I e-mailed the recitation teacher the work I missed when I wasn't in class, when the class took place, since I was absent. He tells me, "Oh I deleted your e-mails." WTF! I e-mailed the main professor, the lecture teacher, 2 weeks ago, and sent out another e-mail a few days ago. No response. This is killing my GPA, so what should I do?

Thanks,
Kishan

Can you replace your grade if you retake the class?

if not you need to talk to the professor face to face immediately....if that doesnt help you must go to the Dean

Hmm, I'm not sure if I could replace my grade. My academic advisor is on vacation, so I tried e-mailing her, but she didn't respond. How can I speak to the professor in person? Aren't they off for the break?
Thanks,
Kishan

Do you figure I should go to the main professor or the recitation teacher? The main professor is MUCH nicer than the recitation teacher, who is a jerk.

I believe your main professor the one who give out the grade. they usually leave phone number and office hour on the syllabus. if they don't, you would have to deal with this when next semester start

most schools allow up to 1 semester for grade corrections.

few semesters ago my professor lost my final. I didn't know until I contacted to the other professor. its taught by two.

after talking to the professor who was supposed to grade the final he put through grade correction and few weeks later I got a notice from admissions & records.

went from F to A-

F was given as no final = automatic F.

so just talk to professor when classes start up again and corrections can be made.

STONY BROOK!!! must go to professor, i'm sure you need some sort of documentation or his/her approval of grade change. Maybe you miss 1 too many classes.

Dude, you need to go right to the ombuds office. I believe its somewhere on the bottom floor of the student union...theyll fight for you, and make the profs listen when they dont want to.

Believe me, I know how bad the recitation teachers are at SBU. I'd be willing to bet his english skills are barely passable.

And I really hope youre not in or trying to get into the CS program there....theyre a bunch of bastards and a real stickler for the rules...if they said that you cant miss a certain amount of classes, whether or not you handed in the work, youre screwed.

Which is why you always keep copies of the emails you send for something like this.

Heres the thing, my professor is really cool, and I actually talked to him outside of class and such. I'm afraid they may say you had too many absences and still fail me. So I don't want to upset the main professor by "bypassing" him and going to another level-it seems disrespectful. If he doesn't listen, then I could go to the ombud's office. What do you reccomend?
Thanks,
Kishan

Thats about what I'd figure would happen in BUS 110. In a class like that, youre a number, not a student.

If you say the professor is cool, and that he isnt the reason this is happening, then he is who you have to go to. The recitation teachers are almost always grad students who honestly have no idea wtf they are doing half of the time.

The main prof is just not checking his email until he gets back...if he's as cool a guy as you say he is, he is going to understand fully why you didnt want to wait. Seriously, go directly to ombuds. In as huge a school as SBU, you dont have time to sit around on it.
