I usually just get my self so tired that I pretty much pass out. A few weeks of staying up 20 hours a day generally gets me there. As soon as I can't keep my eyes open anymore or my teeth start hurting (long story - when my teeth start hurting I know I've been up too long), it's time for bed.

That stuff never works for me. Two weeks ago I spent Saturday as a normal work day preparing for a talk I had to give Sunday morning. My neighbor invited me out for dinner and to a party that evening. I didn't know a party meant going from 8 PM- 5 AM with 4.5 L bottle of Johnnie Walker and karaoke. So I get back at 5 AM, finish prepping for the talk, take a one hour nap, and give a three hour talk at 9 that morning. Then I get invited to go out the Halloween themed stuff at the local theme park by coworkers that afternoon and I don't get back until 1 AM. So I was up for 40 hours with only one hour of sleep and it didn't really make it much easier to fall asleep.

When your teeth start hurting, how are your knees?

Are you one of those people who take too many drugs for every little thing, care too much about everything, and take life too seriously?

LOL. No. I take the drugs I'm supposed to, when I have to. I care about what I have to. And try not to take anything seriously.

It's just frustrating right now is all. ...

Do you drink alcohol? I know a guy who drinks quite a bit (he's an alcoholic actually) and he has great difficulty sleeping. Alcohol affects your sleep patterns in bad ways, especially if you drink everyday.

There's a tea called Nighty-night which is made from a certain combination of herbs as a sleep aid. I'd recommend this, I have always had trouble sleeping and I find it really does work quite well. Goodluck!

You've probably been asked this a million times (if so, sorry in advance) but how much exercise are you getting? How is your diet?

If he's had insomnia for any length of time I'm sure he's tired of being asked the same damn questions. Lord knows I am, everybody has their own idea on what's wrong and acts as if nobody else has suggested it before. Yes I've already tried exercising more/regularly. I don't eat within X amount of hours before bed. I go to bed and wake up the same time everyday. Yes I establish a bedtime routine. Yes I cut back on caffiene and abstain in the evening. Yes I have tried reading, watching TV, meditating, etc. before bed.

Half the time I don't mention to people that I have insomnia just so I don't have to listen to the bullshit all over again.

I've had this for about 4 years now.

I've been dealing with "feel tired but can't fall asleep" my whole life ... It sucks. I've had some luck with going to sleep at the same time, but none of the other stuff helps. I don't think it's a physical thing so much as a mental thing. I mean, brain active and won't shut down = can't fall asleep. At least that's my issue. Sucks that the Tylenol PM doesn't do anything for you any more, sucks even worse that your body's so used to the Ambien ... Makes me want to avoid it even more ... Maybe you got some other type of issue like ADD that is going ontreated? Perhaps you need to look for the source of the problem elsewhere.... Good luck!

Fact: Alcohol Inhibits Sleep

As a fellow lifelong insomniac, all I can say it that practicing good sleep hygiene is the only effective treatment. I'm sure you've heard it a million times before, but if you're imbibing before bedtime, you obviously aren't following the advice.

I do too. I haven't had normal sleep patterns for 5 years. It's a function of my depression methinks. Right now I'm on a 10am-4pm schedule. It seems to rotate, it makes it so hard to function. Sleep deprivation does not reset my sleep patterns. When I get REALLY tired, I feel it in my adrenals.

I seem to fit the following very well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D...d_sleep_phase_syndrome

It does go in stages though. Sometimes I'll be in this 8pm-4am kick. Getting a full night rest, and a jump start on your day is so amazing. It sucks so badly to wake up and already should have had stuff done, that could not be done during the night (oil change, library stuff, eat out before work, etc)

Hire someone to cold cock you into unconsciousness every night before you go to bed?

Most chicks prefer warm cock...I think cold ones would be much less popular.
