I drove a 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet

A friend of mine stopped by yesterday with his silver Porsche and tossed me the keys and said here, go take your wife for a drive. So naturally I took him up on the offer. Man, what a great car. Very tight, vault like in construction with zero creaks or rattles anywhere. Naturally we put the top down and I drove it on a nice little ten minute test drive. I put it in sport plus mode which opens up the exhaust and gives the engine a raspy throaty sound. I wasn’t crazy about the engine sound but it is certainly a great performance car. Handling and steering feedback is perfection and the brakes, while not the carbon ceramic brakes, were also excellent. The seats are very supportive and comfortable and the folding top goes down quickly and easily.

I just loved driving it and could see me owning one of these cars at some point.

I enjoy the styling of the Porsches, but I just can't get over the sound of the engines. I know Porsche lovers like the sound, but I just have never liked the engine tone of them - they just sound rough.

The only Porsche that I've found sounded good was a Cayenne Turbo that clearly had some exhaust mods and transmission programming, down shifts it would bark and sounded so aggressive. Sign me up.

Love the drivetrains of newer Porsches (except for the difficult servicing) but really can’t get behind the styling. Looks like it got an allergic reaction from a bee sting. Now one of these, yes plz, I will own one some day when I have some more garage space, as long as prices remain roughly where they are (or go down?!?! One can dream):

Have you driven a Cayman or Boxster? You hear a lot more intake noise than exhaust on those models. Personally, I think the intake whoosh sounds good.

I haven't personally driven one, but yes, they both are less raspy on the exhaust note (until you get into the higher performance models).

I guess I just have an affinity for the sound of V or Inline engines - the boxer flats just don't appeal to me unless the exhaust is heavily tuned. This is why I like the Cayenne V8 sound much more over the flat 6 used in almost all the Porsche cars.

I've driven a Macan Turbo and those sound good too.

Does the 2020 4S still have launch mode? I drove a friend's 2016 or 2017 with it, and it's a blast.

I'm not sure. I didn't really push it hard because I don't know what the different modes did. I did put it in Sport+ mode to hear the exhaust and feel the responsiveness but again, I didn't want to find out the hard way that this turns off traction control or something like that. It's a fast car for sure though.

Yes, I was never a Porsche fan until I drove one. It's too rich for my blood though.

The rims look awesome. Classic looking.

I didn’t care for the wheels. They look like a modern interpretation of classic Fuchs wheels from the 1970s and I’m not sure that is a good thing. I prefer a more modern looking wheel on a car like this. They are freaking huge though with 20” wheels up front and 21” wheels in the rear.

They make the 19” forged AMG wheels on my car look tiny.
