I drove 50 miles while sleeping!

I was driving back from downstate on the freeway and it was really late and i had been driving for quite a while. The last thing i remember was me taking a drink of my bottled pepsi and putting it back in the cupholder, then glancing at the odometer. When i woke up, i had no idea where i was, and i noticed that but not 100 yards ahead of me was the end of the freeway, i would have run into a concrete barrier if i hadnt waken up. it still makes me wonder.....i pulled off the freeway and i looked at the odometer it read exactly 51 miles from when i had last looked at it. I have no explanation from the lost time except that i had fallen asleep and somehow managed to stay on a twisting freeway without any type of cruise control.

You think you fell asleep. In reality you were abducted by aliens, and they performed their sick experiments on you.

I saw a researcher on TV a few years ago that tested the ability of a person to drive while asleep. She said that as long as the eyes remained open, the brain continued to drive the car, even the the brain waves showed the person was "asleep". Once the eylids fell, it was crash time.

I don't think it's unsafe. It happens to me sometimes too.
I just drive instinctively, my eyes stay open, but after a while I don't remember how I got from A to B. It's massive tunnel vision.
For those interested, that happens to me when I take I5 to Los Angeles from San Jose. So watch out for a dark green Maxima.

Half sleeping, brain cuts out, instinct takes over. You're eyes are open and your body reacts to keeping the car on the road. It's happened to me a couple times.

Mr. Chicken, I think you are right. That's what happens to me. As long as your eyes stay open, only the driving part of the brain stays on, and the rest goes into some sort of standby. Also, sometime when I "wake up" from that state I am suprised by what I see, and that's kinda bad, because I sometimes do something sudden.

<< Umm next time you drive call me and let me know so I can stay off the road, okay? >>

You have no room to talk, Mr. I'll-take-my-half-out-of-the-middle !

SuperTool, I think almost everybody has been there. Realising what just happened usually scares me enough I stay awake after that. :)

Next time you're tired why don't you pull over for a nap instead of endangering others lives?
