I was at the pharmacy and was just taping my mom's driver's license along the black rubber part of the passenger window and VOOOSH! I drop it right into the door. Iam going to attempt a rescue recovery. I just need a little advice though. MY current plan of Operation License Extraction, is to unscrew the door interior and hope for an obligatory gaping hole where I could squirm my hand around in hopes of finding the license. But is that the way to do it? or does the door actually split into 2 pieces?

usually there are a ton of little plastic clips holding the interior part of the door to the rest of it. once you get those clips off you should have access to the inside. it's a very annoying process and if you're not careful you're gonna end up breaking off some clips. would be nice if you had the factory manual (not user manual) that has illustrations shoing where the clips are and how best to remove them

This simply won't work, don't even try to go from the inside of the door. Only possible way is to take a cutting torch to the exterior of the door. Try that before anything else.

Oh... if you take the door panel off, you'll find lots of big open holes cut into the door metal. THis is intentional so as to provide access to door lock mechanisms, window channels, etc.. so you should be able to easily fish the license out.

Keep the window rolled up.

first off - what kind of car?

second off - it is probably lost. the door inner and door outer are put together solid. the only holes in the door inner are the holes for speaker openings and grab handle openings. other than that, nothing is big enough to get your hand in. you might be able to reach in through your front door speaker (if you have one).

else you are SOL unless you want to remove all of the door handle assembly.

edit - just pay the 7 bucks and get a new DL.

Those fscking clips suck. If you don't break half of them when taking it off, you'll break them when you try to put it back on.

If that were true how would you service the locks, power window motor and assembly? Cut off the outer door skin?

Well I unscrewed it enough So i could slide my hand in through there, there is one hole that I found. But it seems that hole does not give me access to where the license actually is. There is a speaker, I'll try going through there.

Every car I have ever taken the panel off of has plenty of places large enough to stick your hand in and retrieve something that has fallen in. As mentioned by a previous poster they have to to allow for accessing the window and locking hardware.

I feel your pain.

I remember about 10 yrs ago I got pulled over for a bogus speeding ticket (Cop even admitted to having to meet his quota) and when I took my Insurance card out it dropped in the window slot.

He then was going to take me to jail (they used to do that in Georgia before they got the Insurance cards in a computer system in the Police cars). He let me call my wife to bring another card but she was about 45 minute ride away. A little more than a half hour went by and he came to the window saying he was just going to write me up for no proof of Insurance but not take me in and he drove off. 5 minutes later my wife pulled up.

From what I can remember, depending on the car, however, there are plenty of hole on the inner-side. You should have no problem once you remove the covering.

You may find that there are two open areas in your door. One on the inside for the electronics, speakers, switchs, and one on the outside. This design allows the electrical stuff to stay dry, yet allow water to drain down your window and out the holes in the bottom of the door. I wish you luck getting to it.

Here's a little tip to help you avoid breaking the plastic retaining clips.
Using a hair dryer, pry up the door panel about an 1/8 of an inch, turn the hair dryer on low and heat the clips, this will soften them making them much easier to remove without breakage, once the panel is off there will be large holes in the inner door panel where you can reach in and retireve your lost license.

You're close... Build a giant loop-the-loop ramp. Drive over loop-the-loop ramp. When the car is upsidedown, the license will fall out. Grab it before you reach the bottom of the loop-the-loop or it will fall back in. If it is nightime when you do this, pour gasoline on the outside edge of the loop-the-loop ramp and light it. The fire will help you see the license when it falls, and also the heat will cause the door frame to expand and the license will fall faster.

Edit: The science of thermodynamics is your friend.

That really sucks... I've almost done that before. Just playing around with some snow/ice that was on my window with a card, and it almost went in...

I learnt not to do it any more... :)
