I sold an item on Amazon and I guess they "need" your checking account to give you the funds. Should I worry at all? I wish they couold just give a gift certificate to me instead!

Set up a seperate checking account with no tie to your other one. That's what I did. No balance required, and it's free. I use it for receiving Paypal. No way would I give them my "real" checking account.

So go sign up for a no fee, no frills checking account & use that for this kind of stuff.

Don't keep money in the account, just have it there for situations like this.

I dunno about a credit check, but it's not exactly difficult to obtain a checking account.

That's what my wife did for her new Paypal account. Went to her credit union (banks can do this also) and asked them to open a new no frills no monthly fee checking account for her and they did. They also linked it to her existing checking and savings accounts so she can instantly transfer funds between the 3 accounts online, via phone or at the ATM. This way if her Paypal account is ever hacked into or ripped off, only her Paypal account (which has a max balance of $20) is impacted and her REAL checking and savings accounts are safe.

Chances are they won't run a credit check but they will run a CheckWrite check to see if you are notorious for bouncing checks. If you haven't been bouncing checks left and right you should have no problems.

Some banks even allow you to open a new checking account online or via phone, give it a try. This should give you and the Mrs. a lot more peace of mind since Amazon will only have access to that account and not your regular accounts.

IF you have an existing checking account, go to your bank and explain the situation and your concerns.

They may be able to quickly create another account for an existing customer.

I did it, but they take several weeks to send you the first payment -- and they don't take things *out* I've done around ~80 transactions with them.
