I came to this thread, expecting I was going to have to do some moderating work & bring down the ban hammer before I spend the rest of my day going to the garbage dump & doing other useful things. I hope you're pleasantly surprised so far by the responses. For the most part, positive. After a while, you learn most of the names and without reading their posts, have a pretty good idea what they're going to say/the tone they say it in.
 
The anonymity of the internet.

I worked for a call center taking reservations for a worldwide hotel chain. People would yell and scream at me for stuff I had no control over. Again, anonymity.

I think a lot of people are angry in general and need somewhere to take it out.

He's been gone for a year. This is like a home coming. We play nice on the first day.

Anonymity is the most important part of democracy and free speech. Did you ever ask yourself why voting is anonymous? It's so you don't get backlash for sharing an opinion. Here on the internet, you get the full force of what people are thinking. This isn't PC bullshit like real life where you can't straight up call people racist names or say they are retarded or say they should kill themselves.

I love it when people are accustomed to the way real life works then they try the same approach on the internet. Suddenly they find out they're actually stupid and people don't like them. They also find out the consequences will never be the same :awe:
 
I've noticed that ATOT goes through phases of aggressiveness. Some days, every thread will inevitably have "Thread Fail" in the second post or the "are you ok" poster.

All I said is you see the real character of any individual. Not everyone changes when presented with an anonymous method of communication. If they change, all you see is the true self, in comparison to the side they are forced to moderate in normal life.
If they don't change, they are still showing their true character - their character that is persistent across all fronts.

my true self is far from what u see here.

in reality I have a complicated life, at work and at home. posting anonymous rants and insults provides comic relief. its all in good fun to release some stress. if anyone's ever been offended, I'm sorry about it. but u probably suck so who cares 🙂

Or when people are too weak or afraid to be themselves in real life and have to come to an anonymous forum in order to be an asshole or tough guy or whatever else their latent fantasy-self might be. Love that.

Can you imagine a politician getting up on stage and flat out saying that all people on welfare are lazy fucks who need to just die already? Of course nobody does that when their name is tied to it, but that's exactly how half of P&N feels. When you are held accountable for things you say, you basically lose all of your rights to free speech. You can be fired for making sexist remarks at work. You will never get elected if you say what you are actually thinking. You will be shunned by your family if you say your cousin is a stupid bitch who deserves to be in jail.

Freedom, deal with it! The internet is the only place you'll find it.
