I don't understand why Anime fans are seen as nerdy or socially inept...

I'm not a true anime geek, but I do enjoy watching the occasional movie or anime series. 1 out of every 8 movies I watch are anime movies.

It still sounds like you're a "because it's anime" type of guy. Do you browse the anime section and pick something because it looks cool, or do you hear about something by trusted word of mouth (not another anime-lamer) or reviews? That is what differentiates the anime-lamer from the "enjoys stuff that's good regardless of whether it can be classified as anime or not" kinda consumer.

I used to watch Anime in like 6 hour blocks, I'd just plow through shows episode after episode. However, I never once bought a doll, or an oddly shaped pillow, never set it as my background, or dressed up like a character to go outside, or throw japaneese catch phrases into my normal vocab. That is how I've been able to hide this deep dark secret and it feels good to let it out.

More.

Come on. Let it go...

Marathoning shows, anime or otherwise, is better than watching them one week at a time IMO. I cannot stand waiting for the damn eps to come out to resolve a cliffhanger or whatever.

I marathon shows. Usually by season though and I usually watch it all over the course of a few days.

With the previous season of 24 I'd tivo it every week and just watch the backlog every 5-6 weeks.

The only anime-ish thing I've ever enjoyed is Avatar. A few weeks ago I watched all 3 seasons over the course of 5 or 6 days. (Note: I said 'anime-ish' because I don't know what the anime diehards consider Avatar.. I consider it a funny cartoon)

I've noticed over the years that anime fans are seen as geeky and nerdy people who can't get a girlfriend. They are often thought of as people who prefer animated females over real women when it comes to sexual attraction. Even though there might be anime fans who go to such extremes, most anime fans are normal, socially active people.

There is no reason why we should be labeled as geeky just because we enjoy anime.

What if you watch anime and you wear a flash drive around your neck?

Jesus fuck. That's so terrible I can't even think of a term that encompasses how terrible it is.

I love the Ghibli films, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, Tokyo Godfathers, and such, but I sure as fuck don't hump an anime girl pillow every night.

I like anime, and I browse anime looking for something to watch, but I rent based on reviews and type of story. I like the more mature anime, with more intelligent storylines and developed characters. I don't like mindless action or silly storylines.

Come on... I've seen many people wearing their flash drives around their necks... You all make it sound like I'm the only person who does it. In fact, many of you are probably wearing one right now.

Only the geeks... not that there's anything wrong with that.

The last one I can think of was telling me about the sweet rig he was building, and about his Shadowrun campaign.

It's because there's a difference between a sporadic watcher and the obsessive fan. While not every heavy anime watcher is the nerdy type, it's the difference between that person with the room full of anime memorabilia and a thing or two.

EDIT:

To give an idea... I don't really own much anime stuff but I do watch a decent amount. I don't really flaunt it either, so you probably wouldn't consider me socially inept because of the fact that I enjoy anime and manga.

But you can be a real anime fan--with posters and memorabilia all around your room, plus the inevitable pillow--and still be a sociable, friendly person....

OP you're not normal nor socially active, so what's your point? are you defending anime fans that lead normal lives even though you don't fit in this category?

Being sociable != being good with the ladies.
