I don't understand the Jesus died for our sins thing.

No. I am agnostic. I do not discount the existence of "god" (or gods, or "higher powers", or whatever) out of hand, but until such time as there is any evidence whatsoever that they exist, I am not going to go out of my way to believe in them.

neither do the vast majority of atheists.

For the nth time

A-theist - not Believing in a god

A-gnostic - not Knowing there is a god

Incorrect, for the nth to the power of n times. Atheist means you believe there is no God(s), which is functionally different that not believe in God(s) which is functionally the same as not knowing there is a God(s). You obviously don't believe in God(s) if you don't know they exist. Atheists deny the existence, it's not simply a matter of just not believing. It's an active belief, not a lack of belief.

And it's straight in the dictionary like that. You can argue it a million times across a million internet forums and pout as much as you like, but you are wrong and always will be wrong forever and ever and ever. Amen.

Do a search in the bible for the words, "Jesus died for your sins." Let me know if you find anything. I could make a list of the things that are taught in churches for the last few hundred years that don't exist in the bible, or even better all the catholic traditions that Jesus himself said they should not be doing....

Sorry, but you are wrong. The definition lies within the Words themselves.

I have this question pop up in my head from time to time but I always forget to ask it.

So, "Jesus died for our sins."

I don't see what the sacrifice is though. Let's just assume:

Jesus is the son of God.
There IS Heaven (paradise).
Jesus, when he passes from the mortal earth, goes to Heaven to be with his father.
Heaven, by all accounts, is better than the mortal earth.

Um, so except for the excruciating way in which he died, I'm not seeing a big sacrifice?

I hear people say that God sacrificed his only son. Well, no, he doesn't appear to have sacrificed anything, right? His son still exists. In fact, his son is now closer to him and in a much better place.

What am I missing here? I have to be missing a lot.

The fact that you are asking the question means you will find your answer soon. That's how it works.

We all live in God's super computer. You think Monarch butterfly's automatically know where to migrate every year when they are born, somehow by magic? They are programmed to do this.

We all live in God's quantum computer. Where all out comes of your existence are played out in a endless multi-verse. Every decision you make, whether you die young or old, every possible scenario is played out. At the end of it all you return to God. Now the question is, are you a program or a spiritual being plugged into this quantum computer to further your spiritual progression?

Just a thought I had.

Since he cannot possibly be correct, I assume you are both in the same cult.

An atheist is simply not a theist, so agnostics are not excluded from this category. I understand that as a theist you struggle to apprehend reality accurately, so I am offering this information to help you.

This statement illustrates the fundamental problem with your thinking process; you simply can't seem to grasp a basic concept because your mind is in denial that it's even possible.

Just because you can't see how it's possible, doesn't mean that it's impossible, it just means that you don't understand it yet.

Broken down so a 10 year old can understand

A = Not
Theist = One who Believes in God or gods
Gnostic = One who Knows about God or gods

Simple as Elementary Math.

A religion thread on ATOT that spiraled out of control?!?!? No way I wouldn't have guessed that would happen!!!
