I don't think I can eat in-n-out anymore, why can't they use gloves?

On the east coast, most tend to use gloves when preparing your food. Foods that require direct handling and assembly.
It bothered me in LA/SF where people made my burrito or sandwich with bare hands but I just forgot about it.
At in-n-out, i never noticed it but this old creepy guy and who knows where his hands have been was handling the burger station and it's just very unsanitary. What's worse is the way they squeeze the lettuce with bare hands (his right hand). Why is it hard to just use gloves?

It's worst at Del Taco. I stopped visiting them after I saw the manager taking orders, handling the money then jumped right back with the crew to help them wrap burritos. ek

I saw a guy at subway making subs during the lunch rush. The manager was there, everyone was on the line working. The guy/kid pulled up his pants, he was wearing the plastic gloves but he just kept on working. Nobody on the line including the manager seemed to notice or care. I walked out, shorter line for the rest who stayed.

That was a few years ago, I still think about it form time to time and wish I would have said something.

The natural dirt on a persons hand is unimpressive to the things that accumulate while touching stuff all day long. Unless they change their gloves between every item (they dont) it really isnt any different.

My tuna sub at subway had a large dead fly in the middle of it. Was too far to go back and complain. Tossed it.

Ever wonder how the world population grew to 7 billion with a whole lot of people eating food prepared by people not wearing gloves? If you're this squeamish, prepare your own food.

Not sure I understand... all he did was pull up his pants?

The gloves often just give a false sense of security. You can watch the same people wear gloves to make your food, take some money, go back to food. Or watch the kitchen workers handle raw meat and cooked meat with the same tongs/spatula/etc.

Do you wear gloves at home? Do you think chefs, or any of the help in a fine restaurant, wear gloves? If they follow the proper procedures of hand-washing, avoid cross-contamination, and observe proper temperatures for foods, that is basically covers 99% of food-safety procedures right there.

<---Lives in MI and hasn't seen an In-N-Out since 90-91, maybe. Maybe the 80's. I would love to go back and eat at one, and I wouldn't care at all about the food safety :p

I lived over three decades before I saw ANYONE wear gloves, and I somehow managed to survive. I prefer they don't wear gloves. It's more comfortable to not wear them, and a happy employee is less likely to piss me off.

This. Gloves are not a substitute for good hygiene and general cleanliness in the kitchen. I worry more about food storage temperatures than gloves.

wearing them for a 4 hour shift is not exactly better.

I'm more worried about what goes on in those factories for packaged foods. Cans of soup etc.

The authors note that studies in the United Kingdom have concluded that compared to bare hands, gloved hands can contribute as much if not more bacteria to foods and food-preparation surfaces, so gloves can be a cause of cross-contamination. Gloves should be changed or sanitized when cooks move from working with raw meats to preparing vegetables and other foods. The study suggests one disinfecting method to guard against cross-contamination, but it involves a time-consuming, five-step process:

etc, etc, etc on google

1st world problems...

The things some people worry about. Do you wear gloves when you prepare your own food at home? By the way, I watched my wife scrape some of the breading off raw chicken the other night and eat it. She's still alive.

An average doorknob, keyboard and mouse contains much more bacteria than a toilet bowl and you are afraid of food handlers not wearing gloves. Jeez. *happily eats sandwich bare handed while typing this*

You have no idea what goes on in a sit down restaurant behind the scenes out of view.
if you did, you'd never eat out again anywhere.
I just try not to think about it.

I once went to the grungiest burger place ever in the US, this little dumpy place hard to describe with one guy.

As he made the burger, he was clearly dealing with a cold and runny nose, and wiped it with his hand while making the burger. I didn't eat it and did not go back.
