I don't quite understand the ending of Cast Away

It means he's a loser b/c after wondering about that symbol for so long and finally finding out where it came from and realizing that she's a gorgeous young lady and that he DOESN'T at LEAST introduce himself to her.

I didn't really get the ending either. It was a lame way to end what was otherwise a fascinating movie.

the ending SUCKED

it was suppost to make you think and wonder blah blah blah

he ended up looking back at the house so maybe he went back... who knows who cares! The movie was outstanding till the end.

Come on people...it was great. What good is an ending that hands you an answer on a silver platter?

The whole time on the island, he kept that box with the artwork unopened as it gave him some sort of hope to return home.

I always pictured the next couple of minutes as Hanks' character returning to the house and finding the woman looking at the box and then seeing Hanks pull up in the drive...and...1 + 1 = 2

Good God, that answer my another question that why didn't Tom open thatamn box on the island. But why did he have special feeling about that symbol? He never saw it before.

Well...maybe he just saw that someone went through the trouble of putting that artwork on a box that would be tossed in the trash and someone who cared that much would be worth fighting to stay alive for (and maybe he thought its beauty reminded him of his g/f?)

He did paint that on his "sail" on the raft he used to escape the island.

Hank was dedicated to his job, he took it really seriously. He gets stranded on the island and everything in his life is gone. He holds onto that package as a way to remember his former life. It's his one conneciton to the life he had always known. It becomes a symbol of what he is looking for.

It would have really sucked if it had a satilite phone in it that he could of used to call for rescue.:Q

I really didn't care for that movie. It seemed to drag on and on then he gets home and has to deal with the shock of dealing with the way things have changed (that was like 10 minutes) then the end sucked.

I agree with tm37 - the movie is overrated, why all this hype? I love Tom Hanks, and I love the plot - being stranded on a deserted island but.....I kinda found the movie a little disturbing. I mean, it was a rock, an atoll for God's sake, what hell do be stranded on. I guess that's what the producer wanted to convey, too bad it wasn't an island like Maui or something. Yeah, I think it would of been funny too if he brought back the package to that girl at the end of the movie, only for her to exclaim "Wow! My high powered GPS unit w/waterproof batteries, emergency nautical satellite beacon" or something to that sort.

Nope, you're all wrong. The box was never opened to make the point that FedEx is reliable and you WILL get your package even if the plane crashes. THAT'S the hidden message.

Then why did he open the rest of the FedEx boxes?
