What are these blue screens everybody talks about??? 😀

Never saw one in 2000 yet and very few in 98.

Before you flame me, I overclock and build my own systems.

Upgrade to WinME

:Q:disgust: You better be kidding.

Of course I am.
Windows ME is one of the worst MS creations ever foisted upon computer users.
Didn't they have an OS called Bob?

Good old MS Bob. I still have a copy around the house that came with Win 3.1.

You have to turn all the garbage off. Turn everything back to classic mode.. the system will be snappier and it won't look so ghey.

That's what I did. I couldn't stand it otherwise.

One thing I DON"T like about XP is the way they setup file sharing. Seems to be a PITA.
Just turn simple filesharing off.

Cool! Where?
In any explorer window, Tools>Folder Options>View>all the way at the bottom, uncheck Use simple filesharing (recommended)

Win2k is the choice of smart people.....take it from me. Those who think XP is better are ignorant.

Then call me ingnorant for wanting terminal services from a desktop os.

It was a front end for Windows 3.1 to make more use of a graphical interface. It was AWFUL...made things more difficult to use than the Win 3.1 interface already was (if you can beleive that).

I never understood why people think Win2000 is better than XP. XP IS Win2000 with more hardware support and a more customizeable interface. Can you all name specific diferences in 2000 that makes it better than XP? I'm not looking for "XP crashes all the time, Win2000 doesn't". If you answer this, give specifics...what is causing it to crash? A specific program? A driver? Let's see some backups for your arguments.

If you can't use XP, then go buy a mac or switch over to linux. You'll probably come running back and wondering why you switched in the first place.

WinXP
I recently acquired a Dell Lattitude lappy (my first lappy), it came with WinXP, I dislike this OS very much, very hard to get online (Cable), hard to configure, difficult to change settings etc, etc, etc.

How long did it take you guys and gals to become accustomed to this newest pile of crap from Macrohard ?

PS. How do i access the firewall settings ? Bah Humbug

hehe live under a rock do we? 😉

Coming from Win98SE it took me about 3 months to get comfortable with the inner workings.

I don't know if the firewall settings are changable....If you need one I'd deactvate the built in one and get a freeware deal like Sygate's or a commercial package.

I am using it with DSL, I disabled all the Bellsouth nonsence, my wireless card's application and just used the Connect To function and entered my IP addy under TCP/IP settings and my Router as the gateway. Then run PPPoE over the router. Nice clean and no extra programs.

Same system I was running 2k on and 2k was rock solid, no crashes, glitches, etc.

During installation to a clean HD: 2 crashes
During driver installation of sound card: No crashes but audio glitches.
Homeworld: DirectX errors during load. Reloading and it would be fine.

And the number one PITA about XP? CONSTANT FRIGGING REGISTRATION WHENEVER I'D MAKE A SIGNIFIGANT CHANGE TO THE HARDWARE. Since I'm constantly tinkering with the hardware, not being able to just unload the drivers, swap the hardware, and then load the new drivers without dealing with M$ registration BS was the last straw.

XP can bite me. I sold both my copies. Luckily I hadn't sold my 2k licenses... Whew. Stability felt more like 98 than 2k.

Pro or Home?

Do not use the networking wizard on either one of them.

To access the firewall, right click on my network places. Choose properties. Right click on local area connection, choose properties. Select the advanced tab. Turn that POS firewall off and install a real one.
Is that version 2.6?

Do you prefer that to the newer versions?

Yes it is version 2.6. Best/most recent version before ZoneAlarm became bloated.

I've had to reregister once...when I changed my motherboard. It lets you do signifigant changes three times before you need to reregister. This involves about 30 seconds of clicking through menus. Therefore, this argument really isn't valid. It's more of a minor thing that got blown WAY out of proportion.

As for your hardware problems, what kind of hardware were you using? Never personally experienced such a thing myself.

When I first got it like 2 years ago, I was like WTF is this POS. Dual booted so Win2k was still on. I used Win2k for awhile and for me to adjust I would go to WinXP for a couple hours and come back. My head hurt after looking at XP for the first time....TOO PRETTY!

I had xp pro on the computer i use here, most often,
I had problems with a lot of background programs running, that i could Not turn off.

a:\format :c

installed win ME

turned off PC HEalth in "Run/msconfig/startup,
