I'm right up there w/ ya. The last few years, every year, I've been telling my extended family not to buy us/exchange gifts and let's just use the money we would have spent and each donate it to a charity or something (seriously, collect it all and donate--not the honor system).
I don't need anything really. Somethings I want, but, I'm patient and can get to them when I have the money. And the charity thing is more in the spirit of the holidays, imo, and I'm not a holiday person either. Then they all get upset about not exchanging useless crap around and look at me like I'm insane (and probably call me names behind my back). Seriously, for 3yrs I've been trying. No luck.
But nobody wants to spend a lot of money buying everyone gifts. 3yrs ago we all drew names and bought that one person a gift. Was OK. Did that again 2yrs ago. Tried to get outta that when a few of us had the 1st gen of grandkids.... but nope.... a sister of mine chimed in w/ a gift exchange idea where we all spend $50 and buy a random gift. Then on the special day we draw from a hat and pick a number. #1 opens the first present. But, #2 can decide if #1 can keep that present or they get it and #1 gets to open another one, then #3 goes, etc. With the last person to go getting their choice of ANY of the gifts or opening the last wrapped item for themselves.
😕 It's very weird and it's being done again this year. So we'll end up w/ some gift certs for some store or restaurant or an appliance of some sort probably.
Argh. At least it's possibly good for the economy.
