Usually when you get a new job, you give your 2 week notice.

This guy just told me he told his supervisor he is "interviewing"

I was like wtf, they can fire you now and you be out of a job and if your new place doesn't make you an offer, you are screwed. Needless to say his supervisor is pissed off. Even if he stay, that relationship is ruined

This is also the guy that thought 6/7 gears transmission is P R N D 2 1 on the shifter

Yup. I worked with an older guy who bailed like that. We were pretty busy at the time and they let him stay for his 2 weeks because they needed him, but he took off just before Christmas. No nice political games for him, he was telling everyone how he got a more awesome job for a lot more money etc. Turns out he was fully into the job with the exception of a required physical, which he did not pass after he left the company we worked for at the time. He came back begging for his job back, but they had already hired someone and been burned by him. It was a pretty rough Christmas for him...I felt bad. Basically burned his bridges, but got rejected by his new job, and was older so he didn't have a lot of options. Good life lesson learned for me.

Maybe he thinks he's so valuable they will give him a raise and/or a promotion to entice him to stay?

im looking for another job and all my supervisiors know it, i told them after i interviewed

might be slightly different as its for the same company i currently work for in a diff dept. they dont seem to care most were references and were contacted because of that, it would have been worse if i had not told them and then someone called them to get a reference

If your boss is cool and understands your desire to leave, he may not be bothered by you interviewing and may even make a good reference. Unless I was friends with the boss though, I wouldn't tell anyone until I was given an offer and wanted a counter-offer or ready to leave.

It sounds to me like the boss isn't cool enough to be told. How can you get so angry someone is interviewing? If they can do better they should. Interviewing elsewhere isn't a personnal attack, its good business.

Anubis :

That's not really the same since it's the same company... If I was actively interviewing for a job and told my supervisor, I'd expect them to immediately look to replace me.

This subject reminded me of what my Mom has planned for next month. She is due to retire, but hasn't mentioned the possibility of going out to anyone....so she is going to request 2 weeks vacation off, then immediately after it's approved she will be handing in her 2 week notice for retirement and walking out the door. Surprisingly she was given the idea to do this by her retirement adviser, apparently lots of people do this (use their time for the last part of their employment).

Her new boss treats her like shit, and the whole office has been treating her worse since she hit retirement age, so I think they are hoping she goes soon. I think it's great she will just drop it on them and walk out.

If it's a good company, give them two weeks notice so they have time to find a replacement and won't be left holding the bag.

If it's the kind of company where security are preparing to escort a coworker directly off the premises immediately after being told they have been laid off, without so much as the modest dignity of being able to clear out their desk, fuck em'.

Doesn't sound like a good place to work. If your bosses don't support your career growth, do they only see you as a piece of the puzzle that equals their annual raise?

Technically one should always be looking for better opportunities; it's in your best interest. No employer should fault someone for that.

This, so much this. Your co-workers supervisor is an ass.

BTW, I'm a manager and I push my folks after 3 years or so to think about the next step, preferably within the company, but if not, that's okay too. I'd rather have people who want to better themselves work for me than drones.

This.

I always keep my managers informed of my intentions. If I don't like something, if something is causing me to look elsewhere, etc. It's the only chance the company has of keeping their employees happy.

If my work all of a sudden required 50hrs / wk I'd let them know that would not fly with me. If we can't work something out, then I'm looking elsewhere.

It makes perfect sense, if you're not happy working somewhere you shouldn't be working there anyway. Getting fired from that job should be a non-consequence, just thank them for the unemployment.

I'd just like to add one more comment that people seem to develop this mentality that they need their job. You don't. You don't even "need" money (getting technical here), you need what that money buys you (food / shelter / clothing).

I had a complete mindset change 3 years ago or so and it has done wonders for my work environment / compensation / quality of life.

You got the job because you were looking for a job. Using this same method you will find another (if that's what you want). If people had this same mentality to better themselves, they could do wonders even outside of work placement. It takes a philisophical change on the person's way of thinking, but the benefits are great. There are plenty of books on this topic, too. Just google "self help books" or "personal growth books", etc.

A lot of them focus on obtaining wealth, but the principals can be applied to anything. The most famous book I'm aware of is Think and Grow Rich, and one of my personal favorite short books is The Strangest Secret. Only takes about 30 mins to listen to - you can even find it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y5g2Pe08uc

There are better readings of it that go a little slower.
