Say I used a digital scale to measure the amount of a substance I need.

Do I include that into the materials list on the scientific process?

you include weight in the scientific process and data analysis. in the materials, you just put down whatever you used, like a scale, ruler, equipment, etc. ive done COUNTLESS lab reports so just fire away and ill try to answer them for you.

Materials, definitely. If by "Scientific Process" you mean procedure, then yo uinclude how exactly you used it, but you would still include it in the materials list.

My teacher (AP Chem) wants:

Purpose
Summary of Procedure (you can put in materials here, if you want + directions)
Safety Analysis
Data
Calculations
Conclusion

No hypothesis (hypotheses)? Otherwise mine was the same in high school, minus the "safety Analysis".

You don't know where your digital scale measurement goes... so thus you DONT KNOW HOW TO WRITE A SCIENCE REPORT. Okay....

In high school, most of my peers wrote such awful, not even half-ass reports, full of huge, obvious errors, I wouldn't worry about where it was. A few key phrases like "experiment involving..." "it was hypothesized that..." "measured carefully", your name, hell that's at least a B.

Nonetheless, to be complete, I'd list the digital scale as one of the tools used in the experiment, and the measured weight where uh you measured it in the procedure section.

Just make sure you put it all in CAPS and you'll be fine.

Exactly. 99% of this is substituting what you did in the experiment into the example lab report the teacher goes over in class. How the hell can't you figure that out?

In my college ( engineering physics ), a lab consists of 5 minutes of the TA explaining in broken english what needs to be done, 1 1/2 hours of speeding through the lab ( lack of equipment, time, broken equipment ), then 1 1/2 hours of graphs ( making up info as required to fit data ), writing explanations based on the amount of space given ( which won't be read anyway by the TA ). If you have nice pictures and stories ( a lab about diffraction can have a tale about your cat ) to go with them, you've got yourself an A.

Ahhh so true.

Probably 14 years, judging from the general lack of sciences in elementary and middle school education.

Edit:

By the way I wouldn't worry about explicitly mentioning the digital balance unless your teacher wants you to, since most of those things are standard lab equipment and only if you're doing something that requires special precision then don't worry about it.

Same with my class. Everyone nearly fails their lab, and half-asses it off. Not to say I don't, of course. I hate labs. Waste of time.

edit= The only way to do a lab is to do it on your own (of free will) , with unlimited time, and actual interest in what is happening.

Reminds me, I haven't posted another Math help thread in a while. Guess that means I'm learning?

Yes and I truly and greatly appreciate everyone's help :)

Have you ever thought about asking your teachers? Since they get paid for it and all?

Just did one (college level) two weeks ago, biggest f**king waste of time in my life. It's the last lab report I will ever have to do in my life (last year of college) though. The best part was that lots of crap wasn't explained properly. which wasted a lot of my time. Thank god it was my job to do it for the group (I volunteered so can't complain too much) on the weekend just before 2 midterms, one of which was for a course I had absolutely no idea what was going on.
