Going out for a night of drinking with friends is fun every once in a while. It does get old. I don't know how people do this as often as they do.
Clubs are always boring as far as I'm concerned.

And who cares how you like to have fun. Why feel compelled to drink/party? I've never understood that. So many younger people feel like if they're not out getting drunk on the weekends then they're antisocial. What's wrong with just going to the coffee shop with friends/family, reading a book, and just having a conversation with the people you care about?

When I'm in my hometown I go out with my mother, brother and sister-in-law on the weekends. We could be doing anything from cooking out to just floating around on the lake doing nothing and I'd still have a great time. Surround yourself with the people you like and don't worry about the tangential nonsense.

one persons tangential nonsense is another persons social networking.

Social networking for professional or personal reasons? If the former there are a hell of a lot better venues for such things.

And btw, by tangential nonsense I was referring to his worrying about not having fun.

Going out to bars, clubs, lounges etc in terms of social networking is great for both personal and professional contacts. However if your just looking for professional contacts strictly then obviously chamber of commerce events and industry expos are much more effective.

Develop hobbies and make friends who do the same thing. I go to play pickup b-ball games at a couple of local rec centers. It's good exercise and chance to talk with people who do something I like to do. Go out with coworkers and see if you make friends. Significant others also do the trick.

I am at the point where I have family obligations and don't go out every night, so I make friends with neighbors who also have kids. My daughter will be playing soccer this fall, so there are parents on the team.

Lots of ideas, be creative!
