its a red wine so........do you open the bottle and let it "breathe" for a couple of minutes before pouring or serving?

all in all, the fluid's going thru my mouth and down my throat but i was thinking in terms of like...

licking it out of a bowl like a cat
chugging it down
drinking it with a straw
gurgling it like listerine, then ingesting it

etc...

Same here. I cannot get into the taste of wine. My mom is a wine connoisseur or wino, whatever you want to call it but I have no liked any of the wines i have ever tasted.

start with a white that is a little on the sweet side, ask someone in the liquor store.

i don't drink wine or really any alcohol for that matter (Maybe a few beers a year) and even I know you don't get an $8 bottle of wine and expect it to taste good.

$8 a glass or $8 a bottle? If it's the latter you may as well uncork (unscrew haha) it and pour it directly into the toilet.

if you're not much of a drinker it may take a bit of experimentation with different, probably sweeter, wines until you get the taste for it, or maybe you never will. everyone's tastes are different.

and no, you don't mix wine with anything...that sorta made me gag thinking about it with ice and sugar...

It appears that none of you know anything about wine. I have had many bottles of decent wind for $6-$8/bottle. Maybe you should try something different than a Merlot. How about a Yellow Tail Cabernet Sauvignon? That's a decent inexpensive bottle of red and less intense than a merlot. You might also try a white (not white zin though) and see if you like that. Good brands that aren't too expensive are Yellow Tail, Turning Leaf, Black Opal...

First of all, red wine ususally is an acquired taste like coffee or hard alcohol. At first, you'll just taste the bitter part and not like it. Start with white wine.

Second, cheap wines can be quite good and often win taste tests. Don't let these people fool you into thinking you need to spend a fortune. It is the equivalent of saying only high maintenence women are worth dating. Sure, some are fantastic dates, but some are horrible. And you can find low maintenance women who are also quite good.

If you want something more sugary, look for desert wines. Although, those could be too sweet for many. Try a moscato/muscat which tends to be inbetween a typical white and a typical desert wine. I really think this type is ideal for people who ususally won't drink wine.

Second on the Muscato. Also a Pinot Grigio.

Well $8 a bottle will explain why, especially for Merlot.

I once hated wine too, i thought it tasted like sour juice. But since drinking vintaged wine (in the ~$30-70 range, though i've dranked $200 bottle a dozen times, i really can't tell that big of a difference yet, at least to justify just a huge price jump), i love it. In fact i drink wine regularly on an almost daily basis, growing through a bottle on my own every 2 days.

I like red wines much more than whites though.

Go to a good liquor store, like Binny's Beverage Depot, ask for some wine that is on the sweeter side, but still decent quality. Then chill it, serve yourself a pint glass full. Drink it as fast as you would drink a beer.

Yeah, i'll say a good wine to start would be a Pinto Grigio Santa Margarita. It's about ~$30 bottle, but it's the best tasting white wine i like.
