plus, my parents never felt the need for cable because they almost never watch tv. . .

Neither. I have a homemade antenna made from a design listed in the Ars Technica forums a few years ago. It's made from 38 gauge magnet wire (about as fine as human hair). I have it on a piece of cardboard but you could just as easily mount it on a wall and paint over it and never know it's there assuming the wall is in the correct orientation for reception. It generally gives cable-quality results except when it's windy. Aside from DVDs, I normally limit my TV watching to NFL and NCAA football/basketball and local news so cable doesn't really have much to offer.
