I don't guess there is an SATA to IDE adapter for notebooks?

Have an older Latitude that is ATA-6 I think, and want to throw a 7200rpm drive in it.

Only ATA 7200 rpm 2.5" drive I know of are the Hitachi 7k100s. Kinda expensive.

There are cheaper SATA drives, but is there any sort of adapter for notebooks?

I figure not :(

Sadly your out of luck you need to use a 44pin 2.5" pata laptop drive, if you can still get them the 7k60 from HGST may be cheaper than the 7k100's but old style laptop drives are a dieing breed these days as the majority of new laptops just use sata, plus their is no room in a laptop for a converter.

Yeah I figured there wasn't an adapter, just wanted to make sure. I checked Hitachi and there are some 7k100s out there, but expensive :(

If I could snag one for say $40-$50 I'll jump, but guess I'll stick with whatever is in there.

Thanks

There are still some PATA 2.5" drives, not too many 7200 RPM. This is the biggest you can get - not an unreasonable price.

7200/2.5

You can go up to 160 GB at 5400 RPM. That is not a bad drive - I have two of them (Seagate Momentus.)

You can get SATA to IDE adapters but they aren't small enough for notebooks and you'd have to use a pin adapter too. You can expect 7200 rpm drives to drink more battery juice too...

The 7k100 I had in my 6000 and then 9300, and then an XPS had the same battery life as the 5400s I had running. But the performance was so much nicer :(

Size isn't a concern, as this is just a supplement to my main rig. Even a 20GB drive would do fine (though I know there aren't 7200s in that).

Follow my link - you can get PATA (IDE) drives from 60 to 100GB. The 60 is a nice price! $74 with free shipping.

You might be able to find a SATA port for your PCMCIA card slot - yup, Newegg has six of them. One might work with your machine.

Those work OK, Zep - I have one for eSATA. But - that doesn't do anything for the main internal drive.

I know, but if he wants some external storage, that would be a light-weight way to go.

Yeah just looking for an internal. The laptop (Latitude D400) was only $225, so dumping 30-40% more on just a drive was kinda higher than I was wanting. A $40 drive I could swing, but they only do SATA :(
