OP, he is doing all this to impress you. He probably has a massive inferiority complex within. If this bothers you so much, just get in a heart to heart talk to him as a friend.
A better thing you can do is make the situation hilarious, acknowledge to him you know he is lying or make stuff up or exaggerate, but laugh the matter out with him heartily. This should stop gradually then.
