Hot Deals never truly recovered from our decision to ban the direct posting of coupon codes and other clamp-downs, followed by the subsequent opportunistic rise of SD and FW.

I oughta' know, I was pretty much the SOLE HD mod (and a huge ferengi) when this decision came down and for weeks I was warning/deleting/vacationing up to 30 peeps a day, no lie. All the other mods back then were hard core old school (this was even before Geekbabe became a mod), and NOT ONE of them gave a tinker's damn about HD.

It was mass insanity.

We used to be the premier deal site, I kid you not. Staples warned us directly they were going to turn their lawyers loose on us, and we pretty much single-handedly bankrupted Value America (with the eagerly dim witted help of their clueless and stupidly greedy CEO).

Sadly, now, we're not even a respectable third. :(

I remember when HD was THE place for deals. Remember the old Office Depot pop deal?

Sigh...while I appreciate the attention everyone gave my thread, Perknose's reply was more along the lines of what I was looking for. I believe the time frame he is talking about was right before I joined up. I don't believe coupon codes have ever been allowed since I have been a member.

Hot Deals was changed last year and now allow coupon codes, FWIW. To be honest, dedicated deal sites like Fatwallet and Slickdeals are really where the deals are. There are so many deals because that's all they do. The downside is that deals can get lost quickly. I try to bring the best "hardware" and "software" deals from those sites to AT when possible as I like to share stuff to AT.

Yeah. I remember being pissed when finding out that we couldn't post coupon codes back then.
Those were the days. I miss Onvia.

Yup, HD was why I joined this site. Never go there anymore.

Agreed. There are plenty of specific deal websites out there as well. I've seen boards dedicated to toy deals, video game deals, home improvement deals, finance deals (well I don't know if you could call these "deals"), and a few other specific types. It's impossible for one board to keep track of it all.
