People who do this like to justify their purchase.
They went through the same debate during their purchase and they chose their path.
When they see that you chose another path, they like to explain why their choice was better.

Like creating a thread on an internet forum?

This behavior is the root of "Keeping up with the Joneses" culture, and it is not going anywhere, what with the capitalism.

Another thing that people say that may go along with this is:

I could have gotten a better deal, or you got ripped off, or whatever else to make you feel bad about any recent purchase...

Usually, I just nod and say, "Well what's done is done" and walk off. Depending on my mood think "As*hole."

It's even funnier when someone who spends thousands at the mechanic and can't differentiate between the dipsticks in their cars give me advice on cars.

Understanding the principle of how cars work does not give you any practical knowledge.

my fully loaded touring sedan?

Don't you have an Accord?

Calling an Accord a "touring sedan" means you either work at the marketing department for Honda or you're trying to make your well-appointed grocery-getter seem like something it's not. Don't get me wrong, the Accord's a great car, but it's hardly anything extra special.

My way of saying V6. Tour is generic term that I was trying to capture here.

Btw, if you google image search for touring sedan it matches my post exactly.

That would be because Honda's marketing department slapped a "Touring" badge on the Accord as a trim designation in order to play off the mental association of a touring sedan being an ultra-luxurious high-end sedan. Oldsmobile tried the same thing in the late '80s and early '90s by slapping a "Touring Sedan" badge on their land yachts.

This is a touring sedan. So is this.

A modern Accord is not.

Some people just have a need to feel superior.

"You spend $150 a week on groceries? I got this bag of kibble for $12 and it lasts me all week! Lrn2finance!"

Meh, I get my kibble at a local place down the street. Chain kibble sucks.

...

He goes, you paid the same as me for my car. I'm like okay, nice. He then goes on to say that my car is 4 years old and that his is new with a smirk.
....
Pics? I've never seen a car with a smirk.

That's what a touring sedan is? I never understand what people are talking about when they use weird car slang. Oooh this car comes with touring tires! What the hell does that mean? Speak English damn it. Just say "these tires are designed for ____" and I'll understand. Snow tire - it's for snow. Sand tire - it's for sand. I've heard a few idiots call snow/ice tires "grip tires" which is retarded because grip depends on a lot of factors.

New designation: cruising sedan. It's a car you buy if you're cruising for gay sex on grinder.

This is ideal. You can then relate to how a person bought their car without sounding like an asshat like the person the OP is mentioning.

If someone mentions they bought theirs used, you bring up your M3. If they say they bought new, Mazda 3. This way you don't rock the boat.

Well in all reality, what I find happen is like the OP experienced. I am in my M3 and some dumbass with a 'brand new' $10-20k car thinks he can enlighten me by telling me 'new' is the way to go since you get a warranty and all that.

Then I mention my M3 has a 'new car' warranty and I own a 2012 Mazda 3s GT.

Personally, I don't care what someone drives. I am going to miss my M3 I am selling now due to having 3 dependents now. I can't really complain because the Mazda I am keeping is still a pretty nice car. Once I get everyone settled in and all those 'machining' costs out of the way, I will go car hunting again. I really am liking to pick up a 335is in a year or two. I just wish the interior was more like my old one and it had a console cupholder instead of the wacky ones in the dash.

my friend does shit like that. when we went to vegas he was telling me how little he paid to stay at his hotel compared to what i paid at my hotel, as if he was special for getting some kind of deal.

he stayed at the flamingo and i stayed at the cosmopolitan with a balcony overlooking the strip.

if i wanted to stay at a shitty hotel with trashy guests, then i would have stayed at the flamingo too. but i didn't, i wanted a nice upscale hotel and i paid for it.

he does that with a lot of stuff, and i'm like that is great. but i don't want to pay less for shittier quality things, i want to pay more for quality stuff.

You paid to stay at a hotel? Idiot. Plenty of dumpsters and park benches to be found.

That's what a touring sedan is? I never understand what people are talking about when they use weird car slang. Oooh this car comes with touring tires!

In the pre-war years the term "Touring Car" was a reasonably specific term for a car like a Pierce-Arrow or a Duesenberg that a wealthy person might use to "tour" the countryside. Before that it was a term for any car that lacked side windows (e.g. there were Model T "touring cars") but that use fell out of favor for the use described earlier. The term fell out of use for a long time until marketing companies revived it as a meaningless term they could tack onto any mundane family sedan to make it seem "special" (e.g. Oldsmobile's use of the term in the '80s and '90s and Honda's use of the term as a trim level today).

A similar thing happened to tires. What used to be just standard road tires (i.e. not performance tires, not off-road tires, not winter tires, just basic, long-lasting tires) became "touring" tires because someone in a suit decided that "touring" sounded better than "look, we know you're never going to go more than 15 mph around a corner because you're 6,000 years old and drive a 1982 Cadillac Cimarron so anything that's rubber and holds air will do."

As for cruising, well, that was a 1950's thing.

Even if the M3 WAS out of warranty that would be a laugh.

I enjoy working on cars, so warranties have always seemed to me to be more of a hassle than they are worth. Sure, some people have good experiences, but lots of people get their claims denied, insanely slow service, or upcharges on incidentals which were "not covered by warranty".

Myself, I'd rather have a dependable, fun, and luxurious used car that I enjoy driving and know is well maintained than a questionable "new" econobox that's always in the shop.
