hey guys i just got a new rig:
i7 920 + msi x58 pro-e mobo
6bg 1333mhz ram
2 x gtx 275
1000psu
lancool k62 casing

when i booted up my comp, i installed os, drivers updated drivers.
and when i brought up cpu-z to check out my core speed, it was only like 1600+MHz .. multipliers were at 12 bus speed at like 133. i thought the stock speed was supposed to be at least 2.66ghz?!
would someone be so nice as to tell me whats going on. did the dude who assembled the system mess with the bios or sth?

and

i was also wondering what the overclocking potential of a system like mine could be.. help!

thanks guys

check cpu speed when you have cpu loaded, at idle powersaving features kick in and lower cpu speed

I may be wrong, but it sounds like Intel speedstep. Does the clock speed go up to 2.66Ghz when you place a load on your processor? Try running prime95, it'll max your processor and it should clock back up, it's also a useful tool for checking stability if you overclock.

Yes agreed, it could be idling down to a lower multiple to save power, but also check your mobo bios setting, at default settings it may downclock the bus or multiplier. And therefore you may have set at least factory stock setting for the CPU. I did on my motherboard bios, but I am talking different mobo and different cpu, and hence may or may not be comparable with the OP.

Just run a benchmark or something stressful and it should bump up to the full speed. It's nothing to worry about.

If you run prime95 on eight cores you will see the speed you are expecting -2.66.

If you run it on one core, because of Turbo boost, it should run at - 2.79 - I think.

omg, u guys were right.
thanks so much!
i ran prime95 and core speed was at 2807mhz.
awesome!
so about overclocking, does anyone have or know of like a beginner's guide sorta to oc-ing. cos i really wanna get into it. and what do u guys think of the overclocking potential of my system.

there are hundreds of guides here in the cpu forums even, just search for them. also, if you go back and read Anand's original i7 reviews from launch, they cover i7 overclocking top to bottom pretty conclusively.

I have the same heatsink as you(dark knight). Its good for a modest overclock. I'm running mine @3.62ghz with it.
