I've recently become very interested in the next gen video game systems. I was a PC only guy and would buy a system, only when it was dirt cheap. Anyway, looking at ATOT, I noticed that there was a lot of critism of ps3 because of the price. So I check out the stats and the $500 ps3 has all the features of the $400 xbox360 but in addition has blu-ray, resolution up to 1080p and as is actually backwords compatible. Also, to me atleast, the games are more appealing on teh ps3. Is there somethign I'm missing as to why the ps3 gets critizised so much?

Because it's expensive....
Plus I'd rather wait and get a combined HDDVD/Bluray player further down the line when prices for both the player and the discs are reasonable.
Early adopters always pay the price.

my post was questioning why it was 'expensive'. For a hundred dollars it gives you a lot more. And the blu ray player is ok for watching the occasional movie but i'm sure everyone will want a standalone player when they become more affordable. Just like the PS2...almost no one uses it as their only dvd player

It's $500 for the basic.... the premium Xbox is $400. The Premium PS3 is going to be like $600. Thats alot of money... but I think most importantly... is it going to REALLY be so much better? I mean sure if you're after a blueray player maybe... but as a gaming system? I think it's going to be pretty par... and here's the real kicker... I can play Xbox 360 NOW... who the hell knows when I would get to play a PS3?

the ps3 basic has all the features of the 360 premium. its kinds of like the the drink sizes at mcdonalds being medium, large and x-large instead of small medium and large.

cause the PS3 bring nothing new? even the xbox 360 isn't that great. The wii actually inovates in the gameplay. i'd rather have that then pretty graphics.

Right, the Wii excels where console gaming should. The other two are just wanna-be PCs.

Though the Media Center Extender functions of the Xb360 are greeeaaaat!!!

Keep in mind that the $400 Xbox360 has already been out for some time, and the PS3 isn't even out yet. It might not be $400 when the PS3 comes out, and it'll have even more games.

It's not out yet so there is nobody here to tell us how bad@$$ it is to have one. When it comes out not a lot of people here will be able to afford it or justify spending $500 for it right away.

I think many here think Wii is cool b/c they will actually be able to buy it.

I think it's because $600 just seems so... expensive. $300-$400 we're used to, so we can deal with that.

But when you charge $600 for the best of the best, the question no longer becomes "Are the games for this console good?" Instead, they become "Are these games good enough for me to pay $600 for the console, then $50 for another controller, then $60 for the game?"

You see how much harder it is to answer that second question in a convincing fashion? That's why the PS3 gets hated on.

IMO, of course.

out of curiosity, what are the games on the ps3 that are apparently "more appealing" than the ones on xbox360? I wasn't aware of any appealing games being announced. Also, how is the ps3's 'regular' package equivalent to the 360 premium? I for one think that for $600, you can buy a pretty decent PC that can play games at the quality of both the ps3 and 360 while also doing everything else a PC does. Wii for me.

Franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, and Final Fantasy sell consoles. The PS2 didn't really take off until those games had made it to the system.

The same could be said for Halo. Without Halo, the xbox360 might not even exist.

i still think the PS3 will eventually come out on top. support from many game developers (konami, square enix, rockstar, namco etc) and SCEA will sell the console.

looking at all of the xbox360 games... none really stand out as the definitive game.

The problem is that I don't WANT the extra features that the PS3 has. If I want pretty graphics, I've got a 360 and will happily upgrade my PC down the line. If I want "different," I've got a DS and will likely buy a Wii.

The PS3 just doesn't fit into what I want, at $500 or $600.

people don't like sonys business practices. rootkit for one. backing drm to the hilt is the other, they are the riaa/mpaa rolled up into one nice little company. people are sick and tired of their hype and lying machine each time they put out a new console. its gotten absurd and its soured plenty. and now they are at it again trying to push their media format on everyone. we don't really want bluray and to help sony in its scheme to dominate that market. let alone pay extra for it.

plus the early reviews of bluray discs is that they are dissapointing compared to hddvd, thats pretty sad. and really, by the time most people care about hd formats, you'll see players for less than 200 bucks, so who gives a cr@p about consoles. and as for the 500 dollar version, no hdmi, so they can nerf your resolution at any moment they feel like it.
