I don't get it?

Isn't the idea behind Distributed Computing to use the idle time on our computers to do some work toward a greater, larger goal. You can set up the client to run in the background and just forget about it, right. It's supposed to be as unobtrusive as possible. Your computer shouldn't slow down any. You shouldn't even know its doing anything, right.

Well, then why do I obsessively check my Seti stats twice an hour? Why do I have to check each of my machines several times a day just to make sure they are still crunching? AND why the hell do I keep ordering parts to get all my old "junk" motherboard/CPU's combos running? Why after upgrading to a 3200+ AMD sweetheart last month am I scheming ways to fit a new P4 HT system build into my short term budget?

Is this just because I only started a few weeks ago? Will the obsession slow down? What is it that could possibly be "FUN" about distributed computing?

You just mentioned thats, but one more for the slow

Irrefutable evidence points to the fact that DC-itis only gets worse with time.
Though some treatments may be effecive at ameliorating symptoms,
(marriage, divorce and job loss, though severe courses of treatment, and arguably overkill are among the most effective)
most who have contracted the syndrome choose not to seek treatment.

🙂

The obssession slowed down somewhat for me.

I'm now kind of looking forward to a day (after Seti ends) when I can actually shut my damned computer down at home without feeling like I'm letting several hundred people down.

Yes, I'll gladly help out another project, but I'm still taking a break. The bearings are getting worn in a couple of my fans and the computer is only 8 months old for cripes sake.

I recently took all the money out of my daughters college fund to build a new cruncher. Why the hell does she need free college anyway, I had to take out loans, so should she. I also set it up to where it looks like my house was broken into and they stole the TV, VCR, and my wifes jewelry! I sold it all and build 2 more crunchers. She asked why they did not steal all the coputers and I told her that there was special security software installed that prevented the theft. I do not see what the problem is! I am a setiholic, and rehab is for quiters! So get out there and crunch! MORE MORE MORE!!!!!

*disclaimer* The above statement is a fiction (minus the addiction part) and is intended to add to the comedic value of this thread, anyone that finds this offensive in any way can K___ M_ A__ (fill in the blanks)

🙂

You probably didn't have benifit of "the warning" given new members:

WARNING:
SETI WUs contain hidden rewards, and prolonged crunching can be addictive. TeAm members should guard against excessive computer building, parts hording, and stat checking. <Quote of recent new member, Pokey>

😛 😛

No one warned me either............🙁

I have been watching you though because we seem to be running along together, although you seem to be slightly faster so I may be eatin' your dust soon..................😛............probably younger and more computers darnit.............:disgust:

Oh well there is always somebody faster............😀😛

hehe... now we can change the tape that plays while you are sleeping from Reisitance Is Futile, You Will Be Assimilated to Reisitance Is Futile, You Have Been Assimilated
