Amongst the first with a big budget and story &c., so no wonder it was better than whatever band simply being taped playing with some snazzy edits.

As for turning into a freak: life imitates art far more than the reverse ;)

No, it's just the best video. It's been 25 years since this video came out and I've yet to see another one near as good as this. I'm sure in that time frame there have been a handful of big budget videos ;)

I was all of 1 year old when this video came out. It wasn't even my generation. On top of that, pop isn't my thing at all. In fact, I really can't stand it for the most part, and view it as the lowest common denominator of music. However, the music, the dancing, the choreography, and the story in this video is outstanding.

Chorus to his hit PYT:

I Want To Love You (P.Y.T.)
Pretty Young Thing
You Need Some Lovin? (T.L.C.)
Tender Lovin? Care
And I?ll Take You There
I Want To Love You (P.Y.T.)
Pretty Young Thing
You Need Some Lovin? (T.L.C.)
Tender Lovin? Care
I?ll Shake You There

He should be behind bars......

I'd have to disagree. Jackson has been a nobody for 20+ years. Seriously, when is the last time you heard a song of his being played on "any" radio station? Never. And it is not because the songs are old. I hear plenty of songs released the same year as Thriller on the radio every day. Being "King of Pop" only means you're the one to be most noticed when you nosedive into obscurity.

Get over it people, he was nothing but hype with money back then, now he is broke-ass hype...

Move on.

That video (And that song) fucking sucks, btw. I turned off the TV for the 10 minutes every time it came on.

jacko must have molestered you. So much irrational hate.

Thriller is still great. As for the radio, around 2000, he had a new album and its songs were on the pop radio stations all the time. As big as Thriller? Obviously not, but still played.

I like almost everything from Thriller - History but as long as we're talking excellent big budget music videos, you can't ignore Guns N' Roses - Estranged

Tis a pity that Jackson couldn't keep it together and took 'turning into a freak' to such a higher level. But look at his old music videos - Thriller, Beat It, Bad, Jam, In the Closet, Remember the Time, Smooth Criminal, Scream etc. - and you have to admire his style and choreography.

I'd rate these higher:

a-Ha - Take on Me
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Kate Bush - Cloudbusting
MJ - Billie Jean, Beat It
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal ;)

Thriller was big-budget and impressive, but the above were all more creative.

Vincent Price laughing is by far the best thing about that video and also the creepiest thing I've ever heard. He was awesome.

And say what you will about MJ, that video fucking rocks and it still does today even. Not the best but I'd take it over 99% of the bullshit that passes as 'pop music' today.

Vincent Price will always give me chills.

No MJ thread would be complete without inhumanly good dancing videos.

I've been hoping MJ will sign a mega-contract with a Vegas casino and start doing weekly shows.

His is an amazing performer and showman and I know I would buy tickets!

Good one. I think that song would be just another forgettable 80s song without that video, but everyone remembers the song because of the video.

AFAIK, Sledgehammer and Money For Nothing were very cutting edge if not technical breakthroughs for their day. Such CGI was uncommon and costly. There was something to be said for established artists embracing video in its infancy as opposed to depending upon it alone for their image and marketing. Video killed the radio star.
