i pirate cause cd's cost too much, and i am poorz0r. but i never pirate stuff that i really like, honestly. if its really good music, i still buy it when i have the money to. i downloaded the tool - lateralus cd before it got released, but i was there at 12am to buy it on the day of its release. i never steal from the bands i love to listen to. and btw, tool rules.

oh yeah, forgot to say this: i think techno music should be 100% free, all they do is sample from other songs/people anyway, so why charge for it? now thats ironic.

Music changes... so get a new taste in music and buy some CDs. D@mn... You'd think you guys would have figured it out by now.

Yeah, I loved the old Metallica, the old Led Zeppelin, the old Beatles.... but they are gone!

Now I listen to stuff like System of a Down, New Metallica, Dave Mathews stuff like that...

Moral of the story: Stop using the "There isn't anything good" excuse to pirate the new "crappy" music.

Well, I don't buy CDs nor do I pirate music. There are some occasional bright spots in modern music but they are far and few between. I think I purchased only 1 CD in the past year and it was the new Metallica album. Having said that I agree that the arguement of "New music is crap" that's used to pirate music is lame.

I'm curious: Are most pirated songs new releases or old stuff? I mean: what is the average age of a downloaded song? Of course, one would expect that the most downloaded song in a certain day would be a newly released one, but I suspect many people look for older stuff, songs they liked but not enough to go to the store and pay $19 for the same 1983 album now lost in the attic.

yeah guys! you should change your tastes so you consume more! cause it would be a real shame if everyone consumed less! the recording companies pockets would be lined with less of our cash, and that would be a bad thing! cause then they might have to think a little harder about putting out something that doesn't suck!

moral of the story: edro13 is a corporate puppet.

edit: i might mention that in this last week alone i bought 15 cd's. and only 2 of them were from major labels. good stuff is out there, but it ain't from any of the companies who are getting their panties in a twist about downloading.

OK the RIAA is right. I'm going to run down to Tower Records and stock up with all the latest Snotgobbler music just because that's all they have to offer and if I don't then I am contributing to their less than spectacular record sales.

As usual, Red Dawn's sarcastic commentary says more than a thousand nefs from any other poster.

Remind me to buy you a  if we ever meet and you don't kick my ass first. :p

I don't pirate music. My music comes primarily from live recordings downloaded through services that have the full support of the musicians. Mostly I am into Jazz/Blues-rock, so artists like Big Wu, Ekoostic Hookah, Bockman's Euphio, adn their ilk allow me my fix through live recordings. I pay them back by going to their shows whenever they are in town and buying any studio albums they produce provided I like the songlist on them.

Other artists of mine . . Flecktones, Phish, and, to a lesser extent, Moe. do have studio/professionally recorded albums, and If i like an album I will buy it, but I will still download their music from the internet, primarily live songs, to supplement my collection.

I am a bit safer with all this because most of my bands support file sharing . . mostly to spread awareness because most of their money comes from shows, anyway. Take the local saint Louis Bockman's Euphio, for example. A few years ago a friend and I were the only people at one of their shows until 45 minutes after the music got going. Now, they can fill mississippi nights without much trouble . . . primarily because, thanks to file sharing, awareness has spread very rapidly.

And besides, your argument makes no sense and this is a worthless post. People who don't buy music because music is crap won't turn around and download the same music that they consider to be crap. If someone uses that excuse (ie: I don't buy big-lable CD's because big-label companies produce mostly crap) then the CD's they would buy are either not available in their area (only place to get albums from, say, Bockman's is by going to a concert and buying one there) or not in existance.

So, um, what I am really trying to say is go back to school and try to pass the third grade.

LOL! :D

Oops, I meant that I don't buy new music. The last new album I bought, that new Metallica, was so bad I almost wanted to sue the RIAA for my $10 bucks back. ;)
I actually have a large collection of old music, mostly '70s and '80s rock and metal, most of which I bought from 2nd-hand shops.

Of all the albums to pay full price for, St. Anger is not one of them. :p

Second-hand shops rule for old tunes. Up here there's monthly sales where they go for CDN$2 each. :)

i paid full price for that ($9.99) and enjoyed it whole-heartedly. the free DVD and access to free mp3s was a nice touch as well.

If you are all saying that it's crap, then either your taste in music sucks, or you have lousy shopping skills :)

Out of my 450 CD's there are only a couple dozen I don't really like that much.

It gives me the impression that the artist worked really hard on a couple of songs and then threw crap on to make 10+ songs on an album so they could make a CD. They release the couple of good songs and try to make everyone think that the rest of the album would be the same.

The days seem to be gone where I can buy a CD throw it in the CD player and love every song on it. Def Leppard, Zeppelin, Police, etc... all seemed to do that.

The last CD I bought was GreenDay's Nemesis. There are ~18 songs on it and I really only like 3 of them.

Truth is I don't download music either. Music is not an industry where I want to put my money.

If there was a service that would allow me to download an artist's good songs and pay $1 or $2 per song, then I would probably make use of it. Without that, there is no way I am buying a CD and only getting a couple of good songs.

Just because a song sucks doesn't mean that they didn't work hard on it. A great song can be ruined by overproducing it. Likewise, a less than great song can be made better with some attention. There's no way to really equate amount of time spent song to how good it is.

I'm anxious for things like itunes to further take off, personally.

Stop using the "There isn't anything good" excuse to pirate the new "crappy" music.
It's not an excuse, but it's a large reason why piracy is so rampant right now.
