I dont accept tips

That would encourage tips. Remember, it's not because he doesn't want the money, it's because he doesn't want to set a precedent that equates his work as something that must be performed to someone's liking for a tip rather than performed as promised for a set fee. It's more professional. A skilled waiter *IS* a professional, and the tip is a direct acknowledgment of that. A waiter's actions earn the tip in the same way another professional earns his fee. Tipping a professional that receives the fee is like pretending that someone else is getting the fee and you need to make up for that to acknowledge the good service. In cases such as this, it just isn't true.

Take it is a compliment that the client wants to tip. Because no matter how "professional" of a field you think massaging is... it isn't. It's a luxury service.

The other fields you noted all require degrees.


I can't find a nurse in a day spa, but I can sure find a massage therapist.

I find it funny, that when it comes to services like in a restaurant it's expected to give people tips in order to get them to cater to you and give you good service, but when it comes to Congressmen and Senators, it's called a bribe.

And a massage therapist is similar to the above in what way? You guy's doctors and health practitioners now?

Massage is more or less usually an optional luxury...a masseuse falls more in line with the bellhops, barbers, stylists, valet, etc. Services.

I think that is precisely the belief he is trying to avoid. Why do you think they call themselves massage therapists instead of masseuses?

I've been offered tips when I used to do in-home computer service calls (happy endings were extra though...) - if a tip was offered I took it as a compliment and thanked the person for their generosity. Sometimes I used the money to to buy beer, more often I used it to purchase equipment upgrades at the non-profit school I taught classes for on the side.

To refuse a tip and offend a customer just cause you have a complex about making your services seem more "legit" than the average handjob parlor or salon down the street just sounds like a case of inflated ego to me. To look down on other service related jobs simply because they accept tips is kind of an asshat perspective. Expecting tips is one thing, accepting one graciously when and if it's offered freely is entirely different.

While I get the point of not accepting tips, it is pretty stupid to lose a client over your policy. Put up a sign, say "I don't normally accept tips," etc., but if the client insists, take it. Refusing the tip and offending your client loses their business and any possible referrals over an issue that really only involves your ego. The client/customer is always right.
