I done think I fried my CPU -- help?!?

OK, I bought a new MB, CPU and memory the other day.

Got a Soltek KT266A chipset MB, AMD 18000 XP+, and 512MB of Crucial PC2100. Going to combine this with what I ahve for a nice upgrade.

So I go ahead and get everything installed, fire it up, and thinks went downhill from there.

System boots, and starts to load windows. Once windows starts to come up, I start noticing the smell of roasting silicon or something. Just I am thinking "Uh-ohhh, better shut down..." Some blue error screen pops up, and before I could even see what it says, system dies, monitor loses signal from the MB.

Now the power will come on, but that is it. No beep, no signal to the monitor, I don't even think there is HDD activity. I removed the memory compeltely and restarted, didn't even get an error beep.

Any ideas? Is the CPU shot? Before anyone asks, yes I did install a HSF, the same Taisol that I was using on my OC'ed Thunderbird for the last year.

If the CPU is shot, dare I try another in the MB? SHould I just get both RMA'd?
 
sounds dead to me- If the mb is powering up there is probably no need to rma it. Did you try and clear the cmos? I would also try that.

When the power comes on ok and all fans are spinning and there are no beeps at all- that sounds like a dead cpu
 
Yeah, from your descpition, the CPU is toast. Put in your T-Bird and use it to make sure the board isn't damaged as well. Make certain the HS/F is making good contact before firing it up and immediately check the temps in the bios for a minute after booting to make sure all is well.
 
sorry to hear... sounds like a fried CPU 🙁 i'd also recommedn trying a known-good CPU in the mobo and see if the mobo works
 
Having fried my own CPU before, I can say for sure you did kill it

What kind of Heatsink were you using????

Athlon died in 3 seconds without good Heatsink contact

too bad on a great CPU, it didn't even utilized at all, what a shame
