I do not get this skit. It was funny but still, don't get the underlying detail.

Did not get this clutch reference or this three pedal reference, or driving with two feet at the same time reference. Did cars have three pedals, I know only break and acceleration, the third one confuses me.

How the fuck is it possible for an adult to at least know what a clutch is? ( never mind knowing how to drive a manual/standard transmission)
If anything, the OP is stupid because the video basically explained the joke. But no reason to need to know how to drive a manual transmission.
This has to be a troll thread. No one on this forum can be this stupid. No one.
This forum has had some stupid people, so it could very well be legitimate.

I'd guess that the OP is Zoomer (judging from their start date here), and has never seen a car with a manual transmission before. Just like the car thief in the skit!

I'm pretty sure my cousins in their early twenties have never seen a stick shift before
Born in 1996 I have seen what stick shift is, a center stick for shifting gears. I thought that was the only thing there was to stick shift, never realised that it required another pedal as well.

Or not...About the only time I ever used the clutch was starting from a stop...and, of course, coming to a stop. Otherwise...nah.

Depends on the transmission.... some are designed to shift with the clutch every time although they usually can be driven without it.

Heavy trucks and many older manuals OTOH would actually prefer you use the clutch as little as possible! (I learned to drive with 3-on-the tree in an old POS Chevy pickup)

I know what stick shift is, never thought there was an additional peddal too it other than the stick.
Think about this scenario:
  • The car's engine is running and turning its shaft.
  • The engine shaft is connected to the drive shaft that propels the wheels forward.
  • Suppose the car is stopped, meaning the wheels are not turning. Thus, the drive shaft is stationary. But the engine is running.
  • How can that be? How can two shafts be connected, while one is turning and the other is not?
  • If the drive shaft is stationary, without some other device it means the engine shaft is stationary, meaning the engine must be off. The car shakes and dies like in the video.
The connection is through a clutch. The clutch is controlled by a third pedal. When the clutch pedal is pressed with your foot, the engine shaft is disconnected from the wheel's drive shaft. Thus, the engine can run and spin while the car is stopped.

When you change gears with the stick shift, it is also wise to use the clutch in most cases. The sudden change in gear ratios is hard on engines. It would be like going from a moving walkway to a stationary ground in an airport. You can mind the gap and prepare your body for the change. This would be like pressing in the clutch pedal. Or you can just ignore the gap, keep staring at your phone, and you might be fine when you reach the end of the moving walkway. Or maybe you crash. Your choice.

I learned to always put the clutch in regardless of the shift up or down.
You are correct. If you are a really good driver though and you know the rpm's to do it at you can slip shift which means you don't use the clutch.

It's not really recommended to do it too often.

A plus for Ironwing! He pointed to the FOURTH foot control - the dimmer switch!

Can I add the parking brake pedal?

One can buy floor switches on ebay but the thought of tearing apart the steering column to rewire the high beams is a bridge too far for me.
