for about a year, i've been doing about 50 crunches once a week.

i dont know if doing 50 crunches once a week is alot.

but i thought it would allow me to do at least 1 sit up.

Why?

and what other excercises can i do?

I do situps, although not that exact form. What is wrong with just doing situps?

I put my legs in the air and don't put my arms behind my head.

50 crunches a week isn't alot at all.

Perhaps you don't curl up enough for the exercise to have an effect? Also, you should increase the amount of exercise steadily, so that if you started with 50 a week then by the end of the month, you could do hundred.

I would do the workout three times a week (MO/WE/SA). Perhaps something like 2x25 each workout. It would be 150 a week. If it seems to much you can decrease it to 2x20 per workout.

And hi all. I've been a lurker for ages, finally decided to make an account :D.

Hmm, crunches work abs, whereas sit ups mostly involve different muscle.
If you want to do sit ups, do assisted sit ups.

Are your shoulder blades coming off of the ground? If not, make them come off the ground in the future.

Situps only work the abs indirectly, they work the hip flexors. You really only need to do crunches anyway.

Do you have some kind of physical handicap that prevents you from doing a situp? Even when I wasn't working out I could do at least 1 situp, probably more.

I do about 130 crunches a day.

It gets easier over time. Make goals for yourself, and then you'll be able to do more and more of it all.

yea, unless you are injured, morbidly obese or something else weird, a single situp should not be a challenge.

what exactly happens when you try?

50 a week...that is 7 a day. That is not training at all, but I don't see why you can't do a single sit-up. What's your height/weight?

OP do you mean to do a sit up without having your feet tucked under anything? That is A LOT harder when your feet are not tucked under anything and your feet are planted on the floor.

Probably because when you do sit ups, you tuck your feet under something. That way your legs will help you out as well.

TallBill: Because too much of anything is bad. I was told maxing out on dips and pull ups every training day is (very) bad for my shoulder joints. I imagine same applies to your hip joints.
