What is all this talk about using the Dx8 beta with windows 2000? I didnt think you needed direct x with windows 2000?
could someone clarify this for me? Maybe it explains why i am getting only 69 fps in quake 3 at 1024*768*32 all options maxed.

Ok, well Windows 2000 does use DirectX, it has to, so it can port 3D acceleration to the OS. Windows 2000 installs with DirectX 7.0a (which is currently the highest revision that isn't beta). So you have it installed already, that's a fact. Though as for you low frames Q3A uses OpenGL, not Direct3D which doesn't rely on DirectX. Well firstly, I would download the latest drivers for your video card (Det 6.xx Series). Also it may be that you're running under Win2000, Win98SE is much better for gaming then 2K, so you may want to look into that.

DX 8 is a good upgrade (for me anyway) but the 7.X det drivers so far perform very poor under Windows 2000, and have some majour stability problems. My friend had problems and i know of other too, also a brief look on the previously mentioned sites mesage board reinforce the opinion on the new drivers.

I can't wait for the voice communication features of DirectX 8 to be programmed into gaming. Communication in Team based games will make them so much more enjoyable.
