I didn't realize fitness gyms were so expensive.

Just moved into Manhattan and the closest gym that has weights is the Equinox on 19th and Broadway. The guy said that he can take off about $100 from the initial fee which would make it about $360 and then pay about $137 per month (but I'll also get a month free on him).

Jeebus, I just came from the Air Force Gym where I can go there for free so this is something that I'll have to shop around for I guess. Is that price what I should expect to pay?

NYSC should be a lot cheaper than that. They're about 90 bucks a month and they have many locations in manhattan.

If there's a community college nearby, they probably will have a gym. Just register for a no-credit class and you can use it for free.

Makes me glad my workplace has a gym in the basement and only charges ~$3/week for it.

Check if your employer has a discount or your health insurance offers a rebate for your fees. NYSC will be a lot cheaper as well.

I was paying next to nothing for my NYSC membership through my gf's old job.

Sounds like a status thing? Status and $1 might get you a cup of coffee.

You are kidding about those prices right? Damn, that's a lot. I pay $60 for 3 months. Of course, I live in LA as well (the state, not the city).

Not that there?s anything wrong with that.

I pay $30 a month, though I live in BFE, IL.

I figure that's the price of wanting a gym in Manhattan where space is very expensive.

BTW, I just looked at their website:

http://www.equinoxfitness.com/

What a foo-foo, pansy-ass gym. That's where all your money is going... into a bunch of sh!t you don't need.

Find a local muscle head gym. Everything you need and nothing you don't.

Yes Equinox definitely caters to the more upscale crowd.

Check out Synergy, or take Amused's recommendation.

Spend a few hundred on a home gym like a Bowflex/Soloflex clone. You'll use it more often and it won't be as big a waste of money when you inevitably give up on working out and use it as a coat rack.

You're obviously unfamiliar with the size of a Manhattan apartment.

They are $30-$60/month here. I pay about $45 for one that's across the street from work. How big is the place for $137/month and what does it include and not include?

I imagine it's typical for Manhattan because space is a premium and limited space means limited machines means higher demand for a machine means the company should charge more so 400 people aren't waiting for an elliptical to free up.
