The U.S. Supreme Court deemed segregated public schools unconstitutional in 1954, but the spirit of that ruling appears to have been lost in time in the tiny South Georgia town of Rochelle.
Students and parents are once again organizing separate proms for the high school's black and white students.

Senior Keela Bloodworth, another organizer of the integrated prom effort who's white, said her black friends wouldn't dare come to the other dance.
"They would probably have the police come out there and escort them off the premises," Bloodworth told WGXA.

I saw on Democracy Now recently that charter schools tend to be almost exclusively African American or white, etc.

It seems that when people are left to their own devices, they prefer to be with others like themselves. Odd, huh?

Seems like that may be what's going on in this story too? Not sure, but people always seem to assume non-whites are just absolutely desperate to be with whites... kinda a racist assumption, really.

My guess is the blacks hate the whites there as much as the other way around and both are happy to continue living like it's 1950, voluntarily, as far as the prom is concerned.

Legal segregation is abominable, but voluntary is natural and to be expected. How many interracial couples do you see? Even in a place like Georgia with a high black population most blacks stick together as do most whites. Similarly, rich stick together, poor stick together, this is how it always has been and will be.
 
Er... it's usually the white racist pieces of shit who are responsible for things like this. The school district stopped paying for the prom and took it private precisely to avoid breaking anti-segregation laws. This was a very common thing that whites pushed through in the 70s and 80s.

The proms are setup by the parents.

So, if you're cool with adults forcing racist ideal on their kids, thats cool. You and Geo deserve each other.


Its not about the parents, if the kids want a prom together, they should be able to have one and the school should stop trying to avoid getting involved.

Smith says that when the group of female students approached the Board of Education this time around about hosting an integrated prom, the district applauded their idea and even passed a resolution advocating that all activities involving students be inclusive and non-discriminatory.
"I fully support these ladies, and I consider it an embarrassment to our schools and community that these events have been segregated," Smith said. "Skin color seems to be a much larger issue for the adults than the students, and my prayer is that this effort will be a huge step toward reconciling the wrongs of the past."

Just like the story in AL in which Morgan Freeman paid for that prom. There were parents barring their white children from attending while the white prom was moved to the same night as the integrated prom. Many students went to both. The integrated prom was lovely, zero problems.

The first time I went to the mall out here in Hoodbridge, I was bombarded by the cute caramel and vanilla faces of the mixed race offspring of interracial couples. I nearly had a heart attack. I was surrounded by children.

HOWEVER, you do have to realize that this country is on the forefront (and probably the best country in the world) when it comes to integrating different races/racism in general (especially when you consider how many different cultures/races we have).

Yes, that's how pathetic this world is.

America (and the world) is VERY VERY VERY far from perfection....

this is an interesting statement. most likely when the parents were the students race was not that big of a deal sorta like it is for their kids right now. but now, as adults it is an issue. i wonder what the catalyst was or is that has made the parents shift in their thinking.
