Just found out today that my application to the school of Comp-Sci at my university was rejected because of my 2.86 GPA (needed 3.05 to get in). Now that I have wasted 4 years and lots of money I feel very gipped. Yes I did learn a lot from the time and it took so long because I have been working so I can finish school without a debt, so it wasn't a total waste...

I am tiffed because I ended up helping so many people in my classes because they were so clueless when using a computer (yet they all had >3.5 gpas somehow). Say commands like grep, gcc, regular expressions, TCP/IP, and they just stare at you blankly! I ended up helping so many in the lab on how to use vi, how to compile and how to login to the darn system! So many are taking these classes for the money a not for the love (how cheesy does that sound!). Looks like I am going to drop out and stick with the network architect job that I picked up on the side.

OK, I feel better now. I just needed to vent a bit :)

don't worry man.. school and grades don't mean nothing to the companies two years after you get out of college..

just make sure that you start to build experience in the job industry and try to be aggressive

<< Nah, I just got denied from declaring my major. >>

then why'd you say faculty? :p

talk to some high level professors, who knows, you might be able to beg your way in if you can show them your talent and dedication.

I will edit my post to clarify :)

Ass kissing isn't my thing... I don't care where it gets you. I am considering Mathematics now. I love math and it will increase my problem solving and analytic skills. Don't know what kind of GPA is required to get in though.

dude....

you need to talk to the dean or something..

i had a 1.4 gpa and got in..... although I got a 3.7 after that (for about 2.5 yrs) long long story..

all you have to do is let the ppl know that you are proficient.. all they know if you dont tell them is your gpa...

you have to let them know...

I hope you talk to them...
and GOOD LUCK

I didn't get into CS at UCB, my 3.1 gpa didn't cut it. Oh well, guess CS wasn't meant for me anyways.

i've got a 2.67 GPA right now. this is one of the reasons i choose ucla. i knew i didnt like teachers or taking BS, or homework or doing BS work. thus i figured i'd have crappy grades in college. fortunately UCLA locks you into your major when you get in unless your grades drop below 2.0 for too long. so i've managed to stay away from that, and am actually doing half decent this quarter (could be the first 3.0 or up i've had in a long time)

Geez... That's going to stop you!?! Come on!! I've seen people with worse GPA's get into it easily. There is a demand for people like us. Definatly go see the dean! I know people at a local college who are head's of computer departments that don't even know how to use Linux!! Why else would they say it sucks!?!

You are probably in some expensive private college, where I go, Comp-Sci is easy to get in. It doesn't mean the classes are easy, but all you need
is a gpa of 2.0. All my friends found good paying jobs after they graduated. All I need is 2.5 years more and a good economy :)

Once in, I would only need to keep up a GPA of 2.0. I don't give a flying arse what my grades are because I am there to learn not to be graded. The profs are great, but the only thing that bugs me are the other students. I find it annoying when the review lecture before an exam consists of people asking "what is going to be on the exam?". I would prefer to review concepts than beg for hints. These same students crowd the profs offices asking the same things.

One time I was asking my digital logic prof about the inner workings of DDR ram vs. SDRAM and when I left people were asking whether it was on the exam or not... When I told them I just asked for interest sake they looked at me like I was on drugs ;)

I haven't given up yet... I was just venting :)

School in BC is cheap! Except there is going to be a big hike in tutition soon. I would gladly pay more if it ment more TA's, marked assignments, and more openings... unfortunately it looks like the government is just not putting as much money into the education system and the students are going to have to make up the cost.

You should go to CSUN like me. CSU's have to take you if you have like a 2.5 gpa or higher. CSUN's suppossed to be one of the better comp sci programs(Though I am still taking the lower division courses, and I haven't seen much evidence of that with the idiots they have teach some of those classes). Plus, its dirt cheap(3k/ yr tuition). Parking is a bitch, but otherwise its not a bad life. I had a 3.5 gpa and a 1460 SAT and I still couldn't get into most of the better schools(UCLA rerouted me to Riverside and Santa Cruz). I am glad I ended up where I am. A smaller school means smaller classes and more chance to actually get some education from an actual professor.

i get to find out whether i got in, in a few weeks. damn i'm nervous. i envy all of you who say cs is easy to get into, i dunno why but here at the uw, it's pretty competitive. but we have a damn good department, and we're just about the only large school in the entire pnw.

jooksing - I have an impression on the networking forum?!?! I am but a mere spec compared to those gurus in there :) I've been pretty vacant lately because of work, but soon I will have some pics of the network room I setup :)

What is CSUN? Is that just the acronym for your school or is it a program?

i dunno , colleges are pretty screwed up. i know people who cant install likea mouse driver who are getting like 3.8 gpas in compsci. not to mention you ask them to make like a simple logic switch and they have no clue either, and they cant program, but somehow they have 3.8 gpa and i'm helping them and i've got a 2.7.

life is screwed up like that, but i'm happy i'm actually knowledeable

Wow! So things like that still happen at Universities. . . It sounds like U.C. Berkeley to me.

I was a casualty of U.C. Berkeley's mighty Computer Science Dept. I had a 2.97 G.P.A. (requirement at the time was a 3.0) despite the fact I had to work my ass off to get money to afford my tuition even thought I would get some F.A.
Just don't let your current situation get to you. Like you, I was really upset, and down because I did not know what to do at the time. Until, I was made clear to me that U.C.B. did not care about their students.
As I found out I was not getting in C.S. I immediately went to talk to the chairmperson (at the time) of the C.S. Department (Barbara H.). She told me I had to plea my case in the form of writing, but it did not guarantee that I would even get some sort of hearing.
After hearing that, I decided to see an Undergrad counselors to get advice, I explained my situation, and how I did not think that after spending thousands of dollars in tuition, and books for 3 1/2 years, and busting my ass off (studying and working), that they could just tell me I wasted my time there.
And the only response I got from the counselor was: "Maybe you were in the wrong major. Have you considered something else?".

What kind of #@%&! response was that?

I was so pissed, that I replied: "I would like to withdraw from the University NOW!" . . .
And with a perplexed look on the counserlor's face, he said: "Are you sure you want to do this? You will not be able to get re-imbursed, yada yada yada . . . " (all money talk).
And I replied again: "NOW! I am sick of this #@&! place!"

And so I filled my withdrawal papers, and left U.C.B. Boy, did that feel good.

I think I made the right decision, because I ended up going to a C.S. University, where my G.P.A. skyrocketed, I re-established a social life, and was recognized for my talents in Comp. Sci. classes. Although the C.S.U. made me take some classes which I felt I already took at U.C.B. I do not regret getting out of U.C.B. to this day.

I admit, it took a bit longer to graduate (almost 7 years), but, like I said, I don't regret it. . . I am not saying you should do the same thing, but I just thought I would share that with you.

And yeah, G.P.A.'s DON'T MEAN A THING in the work force, only the talents you posses. . .

Hope you feel better.

BCYL - I go to SFU... I may live in PoCo but I work in downtown :(. I spend about 3 hours commuting every day (bus+sky-train).

LNXman - Looks like you went through everything I did! I made an appointment with a course counselor but I know they are going to say "You were probably in the wrong major." I know this is the right major for me, the only thing that is wrong to me is the testing procedures. Obviously I am biased
because they don't work out in my favour, but I do not do well on comp-sci tests. Like most computer experts, google.com is my friend :) I solve problems and seek advice the practical way (not by memorizing stuff).
