How do I know for sure? I am too poor to go to the doctor. It is swollen at the base and purplish. I can move it though, and it doesn't hurt that bad. It just feels really stiff, like I am not getting enough circulation.

Well, it isn't broken but it looks gnarly.

Not broken. Ice for 48 hrs and heat after that.

Edit: How did this happen? We demand a story! A story with naked girls is even better.

even if it was broken the dr would just give you a little splint(foam + metal) and they sell those at walgreens. go buy one and some pain meds. fin.

I was attacked by my kitchen counter. No naked girls were present at the time, although that would make things more interesting.

The research I have done says that it can still be broken even if you can move it. Although, the pain has subsided in the last 12 hours.

No, just really crappy health insurance. My co-pay for ER/Urgent care is 120.00.

WOW, thats very rough.

My younger brother fractured his finger and is swelled up and he could still move it (painfully). You should ice it and try not to move the finger. If your finger is distorted in anyway, you are going to want to pay the 120$. If after 2 days it is not feeling better, you will want to pay the 120$.

Or do as Turin 39789 says, as its true for most broken finger cases.

What finger? I broke the pinky bone in my hand in high school. I was being a whiny crybaby and Mike Tysoned a chair, which turned out to be considerably more solid than I had anticipated. Immediately after this, I went out and chopped up a tree stump with an axe (the fact that I had to do this is what cause the hissy fit in the first place... ahhh, irony). That hurt. But, I didn't think my hand had broken; I got an x-ray done several weeks later and they said it was in fact broken, but too late to set, unless I wanted them to rebreak it and splint it (which sounded absurd).

So in my experience, breaking a small bone in your finger or hand hurts, but it's not too bad, and it heals fairly quick. If you're worried, just tape a couple popsicle sticks to your fingers in a makeshift splint; costs $2.00 to make, and hey, free popsicles.

It's my middle finger. So, now I have a grotesquely swollen finger that is all purple and gross. But, I get to flip people off and blame it on that fact that I am "elevating" it. :p

Any nausea? I always feel sick to my stomach if a bone is broken. That plus swelling is a pretty surefire way to tell.

Hope it gets better!

Ice it, put it in a splint so you aren't moving it. That's probably about as good as the doctor would do.

Sometimes you've just got to let those hard-to-reach boogers go.

Bah, I broke my collar bone (playing FLAG football, talk about a pussy way to break a bone) and thought it was a dislocated shoulder until I went to the ER more than 6 hours later.

Splint and let it heal for 3-6 weeks. Take ibuprofen to reduce swelling. Send $120 to my paypal acct.

I could, but they charge 35.00. I am just keeping it in a splint and dealing with it until it gets better.
