Well all my components apparently work! I was able to put together my new system relatively pain free!

Couple minor issues, I think the LED lights are reversed on the header, gotta install a floppy drive.. I guess =P ... and need to install all my drivers, programs and do some tweaking here and there. BUT! I'm posting this message from my new rig! First time building totally from scratch! Go me!

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
WD 80 Gig HDD
P4 3.0c
1 gig Kingston Hyper X 3200
Lite On CD Rom
Radeon 9700 Pro

Congratulations, you have a nice hotrod now! It's much easier than it looks. Take your time with those LED headers, and actually count the pins to be sure you get the right ones. White wires are (-), colored wires are (+).

Feels great!

My old specs were... well an old Alienware computer. I think this one will be just as fast as the alienware was in it's day once I get it all set up.

Old comp was

P3 1.4 gig CPU
512 MB Rambus PC800
20 Gig IBM HDD
GeForce 2 pro

Alienware did a good job, and the inside of the case is all nice and neat with the cabling. Customer support was ok, I had to RMA a keyboard but I can do that with whoever I buy my components from too. In the end.. this rig I built cost me HALF what I paid for the Alienware. Not worth it, IMO.

Hey, Congratulations! I built my first one last month or so. I was practically crying from joy when I powered it up and it booted to Windows. I only had a few issues that gave me some headaches but overall it was a good experience and a major accomplishment for me. So good job to you, I know exactly how you're feeling! :D

Good job!

Whenever I think about being lazy and getting a Dell I remember that if I build it I get to pick the case, PSU, motherboard, etc. for exactly the specs I want, not whatever "pretty close" parts Dell offers.

Just don't fall into the trap now of offering to build machines for co-workers, friends, etc. : building the computer is fun, offering free support for it for years is not :)

Thanks very much everyone. I've got it running well and some games installed. Everything looks good! Can someone point me to a good benchmarking app or reccomend how I can tell if everything is running "well"? ;)

Congrats! I also built my first rig from scratch last week. I did some stupid mistakes (no risers for the MB) but luckily nothing fried :p

Good job! Building computers is the only thing I love to do. I wish I could get a job doing it. If I didn't have a family, I'd quit my teaching job in a heartbeat and go into business.

Well I built my second D-I-Y rig last June. A Kick-ASS P4c IC7 1GB of HyperX Ram Radeon 9700 WD Caviar 120GB& Maxtor 80Gig. It was nearly 5 years since my last D-I-Y rig

Anyway......... At the moment of truth, I was down on the floor, ready to hit the power button on the front of the case, and I did, and nothing happened. UGGGGG. So I go to the back of the case and everything is fine. So then I hit the power again, nothing. Then I think, well maybe the MB is grounded improperly inside the case? O-no, it's in there snug as a bug So then I re-seat the RAM, re-seat the Vid card, everything, the whole works. Then I try again and NOTHING. Not even the power light on the motherboard, which means it's not getting ANY power? And the fan on the rear of the power supply isn't moving either?

Well, well..... Imagine how stupid I felt when I looked over and realized that I forgot to plug the other end of my power cable into my surge protector!!! So I plugged it in, tried again and the baby came to life. Believe me, I felt a lot more relieved that I didn't fry or break anything while building the PC, than at how stupid I felt.

You really do learn something new every time you build a PC.

You should go for it. Hmm costs for mine...

In US Dollars
Antec Sonata Case: $85
P4 3.0c $275 ( you can go cheaper here, the 2.6c is $172.00)
1 Gb Kingston Hyper X 3200 RAM $198
Asus P4P800 Deluxe $120
Western Digital 80 Gb HDD $69 ( Had this from my other PC)
Radeon 9700 Pro (Had this already. You can get anywhere from 9600 pro at $120 to 9800 pro at ~$300)
Lite-On 52x32x52x CDR/W $35

Total: $1082.00 for the best here

$799 for the p4 2.6c and 9600 pro video card.

Add in the cost of an Operating system if you dont have it.

Time? Hmm well I put it together the same day I got the last of the components. I'll say 2 or 3 hours tops, including installing the OS and partitioning the drives and all that. Dont be intimidated by it, lots of great guides on how to build them around and you can always ask here if you get stuck.

Good luck if you try!

Good job..

I remember I built my first WORKING computer a few months ago...

I don't know why but all I did was connect everything in without any knowledge of building a computer and it worked..

I was proud of myself
