I think of the synthesizer as an instrument enabled by technology. The goal should not be to make it sound exactly like other instruments that have already existed for hundreds of years.

Liquid lead!

To be fair, that kind of wonky stuff can sound great in limited instances, but I think guys like Rudess (Dream Theater keyboardist) push it too far. My favorite passages by that guy always actually end up being when he pulls out his classical pianist chops.

Otherwise, I'm sorry, but I love me some quality emulated-orchestra stuff. And some nice prog-orgran.
