I decided to torcher myself with a trip to Best Buy today.....

I love all the people who complain about Monster HDMI cables. Where can you buy cheap Moster cables? I'd love to know.

Their store brand 6' Dynex is usually $25.

They are still over priced but guess what? What bm store has them for $5 like Monoprice? Zero, about the best non clearance deal you can get at any bm store is $15 (and that is if you are lucky enough to have a Fry's around). so maybe, just maybe people who complain about BBY's HDMI cables should complain about bm stores in general rather than BBY. I mean, no one ever complains about Radio Shack and they quite possibly are even more expensive for HDMI cables.

$25 for an HDMI cable isn't "over priced," it is a ripoff.

Wal Mart has them cheaper and I think Fry's has them under $10 regularly as well.

I was at BB yesterday looking at TVs and overhead a "salesman" telling a couple that all LED TVs are better cause they are LEDs rather than LCD and thus have a better picture. I was so close to yelling out "you fucking moron"

They consume less power though, right?

I recently got a LED TV simply for that fact.

If you don't care about power, how does that instantly make them better? Heck, one can argue that a 1080p set isn't any better than a 720p set if you have all 480p inputs.

I do though. I leave my TV on all the time without actually watching it (it's on in the other room right now). I figure the power costs add up (and I have a bit of a thing for power-efficient electronics).

I never said they're "better".

EDIT: I'm also not super picky about TV picture quality, especially considering my TV is only 300 bucks (32" 720p). It has a lot of inputs for that pricepoint as well, which I thought made it a deal. I hope I made an alright choice.

i don't know about you, but for me not being able to enjoy a 400whp car for 2 years would be torture. It was meant to be a facetious comment on him not driving his badass car...
it is torcher but playing with my daughter and keeping her fed is more important than my enjoyment. I plan on taking it out in the spring/summer '09 if the economy holds out and i remain employed.

Maybe it's just my bad memory but I can't really recall ever having any particularly bad Best Buy experiences...

and I've shopped with them since WAY back when. In my hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska they opened one years ago, early 90's or late 80's... man I still have sort of fond memories of walking around in there. Such a different place from what a Best Buy is now. It had previously been a bare bones grocery store called Super Saver with concrete floors, and it was still concrete-floored as Best Buy.

It felt a lot like a warehouse, and I remember vast expanses of these metal bins full of software. I loved looking around at the PC games. This was near when I started serious PC gaming, back when I lived for the original Prince of Persia, Wolfenstein 3D, Stellar 7 etc.

I probably got a lot of games there but two I remember for sure were:

Anyway... forgive my little memory lane trip.

In the years since I've used Best Buy heavily. Now I have a Reward Zone account and I spend enough there that I seem to be maintaining "silver" status wtf ever that is... I enjoy the coupons I get for said spending, and I've gotten my current secondary monitor, headphones, TV, and countless other things there.

They're not perfect, but I honestly don't remember ever having any memorably bad experiences there. That's across many many locations around the nation in Nebraska, Colorado, Washington state, Connecticut, and others, over decades. Sometimes you run into an employee who doesn't know as much as you, and you just move on. Typically I go in there knowing pretty clearly what I want and don't interact with employees much.

Sorry to others who've had worse experiences.

I liked their music selection back in the day. For a big box store, they got a lot of interesting stuff in. Imports, and obscure small release stuff. They got rid of all that, and started selling top40, hiphop, and Latino music. I have no idea what they have now. I haven't been in a couple years. I guess nothing. The cd format is kind of dying out. I liked them best for their music.

LED refers to backlighting, right? I don't follow display tech, and especially not TVs.

This is how I understand it to be, but I don't follow TV tech much either.

correct.

It's still an LCD display, but LED refers to the fact that is used LED backlighting (either single source, edge lit, or something else is quite possible). This would be opposed to CFL backlighting, which was the norm for all LCDs since inception.

It just latched on as a major selling point, now, as a manufacturer you'd be remiss NOT include it in the name of the TV. It's less prevalent to so blatantly call it to attention in the PC monitor/display world, but it's just about become the standard their too.

For good reason: LED backlights provide a better opportunity for pure, neutral 6200-6500K white light, which would not impact the rest of the image. CFL backlights were known to sometimes not be up to standard and fail to produce a perfectly neutral color balance.
This is the common understanding, but it's not entirely accurate - it was definitely the case, but only if the manufacturer went cheap for the CFL source (which was, unfortunately, not as rare as it should have been)
The biggest issues LED solved, most consistently: less power draw, and longer lifespan for the backlight.

It's probably cheaper to source consistently neutral white LEDs (no negative color balance impact), than comparable neutral CFLs. The ability of CFLs aren't in question, as many home theater pro's prefer top-notch CFLs for proper bias lighting. But overall, it's easier to achieve the desired result in large displays using LEDs, should be cheaper, helps provide longer lifespan for the backlighting, is more efficient, and makes it easier to achieve uniform backlighting across the entire panel.

OLED is a display technology. LED is just a backlighting method. LED is often side-lit with only color advantages but the real advantage comes in things like power savings and improved black levels by having a grid that can turn them off in the dark areas and even backlighting when they are all on.
