I currently have these speakers....

Check AVSforum to see if anybody has heard them. I know I haven't.

If you're thinking about getting something, go out and listen to some stuff that shops have in your area and see what you think.

Some shops may let you do in home demos of their stuff too.

EDIT: A few reviews from people who have them and list similar products they've heard before audioreview listing

In audiophile terms those are horrible speakers. The frequency is pathetic. The Sub is pathetic. Now, for layman terms, they are ok if used as computer speakers just to get 5.1 sound if you could get them for 200 bucks cheaper than $549US. These are basically cheap speakers from a good brand name that is overcharging.

I am sure it will beat any Bose speakers. 😛

ture, if not a bit harsh 😉 . polk is a pretty decent home audio company, and as far as casual listening goes, they are not bad. but if you are an audiophile, they are kinda sucky.

Ok, So I am to assume that with these speakers, I'd find it much harder to find a distinction between Quality 3/5 OGG files and a flac? I've always thought these speakers were good, but felt they could be more to them. I currently have them attached to a SONY STR-DE685 reciever.

Probably, not to knock your system, but it is a low-end consumer receiver and low-end speakers, so I dont think you would hear much, if any difference. But it also depends on the quality of the files. Sound is a very subjective thing. Which is why Bose is still around. 🙂 hehe. Some people just love the Bose Acoustimass speakers and the tri-port headphones and some people will say they sound like garbage. (Which, IMO, they are).

Well when i went hunting I had about a 800$ budget and months to choose. I ended up with some Polk RTI8's. They simply sounded better and were of better quality than any other speakers in their price range. i compared them to sony, infinity, klipsh, bose, jbl, everything I could find and they are awesome. They are a little low on the thundering base, but I use a front firing sub anyways.

polk makes nice equipment!

I purchased these speakers for around $400 back in '02 and the receiver for around $300 (totaling around $700) and while I'm happy with them because they're significantly better than my dad's $3K bose system, I was just thinking that there could be more to it than what I was currently hearing.

Trust me, there is. But it comes at a price. If you are need to keep the speakers small, then your options are tough. If you can afford to get bookshelf type speakers, your options broaden substantially.

I would say that your speakers are ok for the money, function, size.

As yoyoyo recommended, check out avsforum and similar sites who specialize in audio equipment/theory.

I would say that if you wanted "the next level" of audio fidelity, 3 pairs of Paradigm titans (for 6.1) $675 before dealer discount and something like the HSU STF-2 ($400) or SVS PB-10 ($450ish) would get you there.

If you are unwilling to spend 1200$ for an upgrade, you might be better off keeping your system. As with all things subjective, it is strongly encouraged that you find your closest speaker dealer and try out some equipment. The system I listed is only 1 of many acceptable systems "in the next level".

You might think your subwoofer is "bassy" because of the acoustical nature of your room. If you were to take proper sound measurements with a Radio Shack SPL meter, you will probably find some large peaks at certain areas of the bass range. A sharp boost at 50 and 90hz is not uncommon in many smaller rooms.

The speakers arent really that great... My set up at home (at college now) was $5k for the speakers and reciever. Thats a lot of money for speakers but the reciever pushes 130 watts per channel, up to 7.1 surround sound, 3 subs (2 subs are 8" and 1 is a 10") which are all build into the front 3 speakers, center and on each side. Thats basically the system for the basement/movie area. And yes, you can hear the system a block away when turned up, Ive done it before for some parties and got in trouble because of the noise. We also have a little Bose 5.1 system in the living room.

Yes I know we are somewhat rich and Im lucky to have that kind of stuff, so dont flame about it.

Dont go to BB and shop for speakers because generally the systems suck a$$. Go to a store more focused on audio performance, they will be cheaper than BB and youll get much better quality speakers.

There are also several speakers companies that are online only that have nice return policies to let you demo stuff.

They will have forums like this for several of them... and you might be able to find someone in your area to demo some stuff.

Depending on how much you might want to spend, you can get some nice deals from online companies.
