I couldn't care less: can't care less anymore because I already don't give a crap.

I could care less: COULD careless but don't care enough to care LESS.

Your second line doesn't make sense. "I could care less" is still WRONG. Sorry.

In the context of- "I Could do it, but nah"

I Could care less... (but don't care to care less.)

if you can't understand after this, you're an eeediot.

So basically, it makes sense if you add in a few extra words to make it make sense?
Well DUH.

No, it STILL makes no sence, because, no matter what, if you COULD care less, that means that you DO care.

That's how I've always thought about it, and it has bothered me for years.

I'd say I couldn't care less, but, I'd be lying, since if that was true I wouldn't have posted at all. So I COULD care less.

that's just nitpicking. aside from grammar they both work, that's all im saying.

Nitpicking?

Think about it for a second.

If you could care less, then why wouldn't you exercise your option to care at a successively lower amount, until you're at a point where you couldn't care less?

Oh I understand what you're saying, but its just wrong. It is "I couldn't care less." That is the only way the saying makes sense, saying that you could care less means that you do care at least somewhat about whatever you are talking about.

It's hardly an insult in that sense then. The second party's goal isn't to make you care less, except in this situation:

"Dude, caring less is freakin' awesome!"
"Yeah man, my friends have been inviting me along to care less, so I could care less, but nah..."

Pretty much and most people say it the WRONG way. The OP has obviously been doing saying it this way for years and is now trying to justify it. I guess he is the eeediot.

given no one disputes "I couldn't be happier" as being the pinnacle of ones expression of happiness,
it should, therefore, stand to reason that "I couldn't care less" be the expression of absolute lack of caring.

Neither does the word "sence."
