It's a persuasive paper on why calculators should be used in the classroom. I'm open to all suggestions:

Dear Parent or Guardian of ________________________:
My name is Miss Love and I am your child?s third grade teacher. I am new to Dublin Elementary School and with your help, your student will reach all the goals we set for them and more. I want all my students to be successful and with your continued support, I know we can make that a reality.

The third grade is crucial to your child?s development, especially new mathematical skills. We will be using many tools to aid in your child?s learning. Calculators will be one of these tools. The first few weeks of school we?ll be refreshing basic math skills and functions. All of the students will have to pass a basic skills test, and once they have shown the basic skills mastered, they will be allowed to use a calculator to aid them in learning more advanced math topics. In my classroom the calculator will be used for math that the student already knows how to do. It will save time in doing more complicated problems and help with checking work once a problem has been completed. The students will be told when they are allowed to use the calculators. During tests there will be parts where calculators are allowed and other parts where the calculators will not be used. The students? homework will let them know when they should use a calculator and when they should not. It would be wonderful if you would enforce the calculators only being used when the homework calls for it.

I know this is going to be a wonderful year. I look forward to meeting you soon. If there are any questions or concerns, I encourage you to contact me. I will be sure to keep you informed with the progress of your student. As a team, we can help your child become the best they can be.

Sincerely,
***********

No editing required IMO.

In third grade we had to use abacuses, and we got out when the shadow of the stick hit the reddish pebble.

fvck that! kids need to solve crapload of basic arithmetic problems, MANUALLY. Repetitive, and otherwise tedious calculations must be done by hand.

I simply bolded anything that i thought might have worded differently It really is fine as it is. I also changed sentences a liddle.

Same here but then again I had to walk to school uphill both ways in a snowstorm.. :D

But yea, calculators in 3rd grade makes no sense.

I can see using them in later years but all this will do is make people screw my price of the food I order when the machine is screwed up. :D

I still remember when I was 10 and I tried to use a calculator to check some homework and my dad looked at me like I was cheating.

i hardly needed a calculator in AB Calculus, let alone 3rd grade. let's not make our kids stupid too soon. most people become reliant on a calculator, and after even a little bit their mental quickness at doing math will noticeably decrease
