i could name 5 center fielders better then carlos beltran

In the alternate universe that I wish that I lived in, the Mariners are contenders and just pried Beltran off the Royals for Randy Winn and Gil Meche (who will be replaced in the rotation by Rafael Soriano). 🙁

nobody wants randy winn, and royals wanted all prospects, not cheap veterans like winn and meche.

maybe for farm prospect, bloomquest and that starters name i can't remember right now (not garcia, meche, moyer, franklin).

Of course, in this alternate universe, the M's would've also gotten Vladimir Guerrero and Ivan Rodriguez in free agency. 🙁

Alternate universe is right! That'd be a butt-load to spend on just two players! Tho I suppose the Angels ended up spending that much on Vlad and Colon as it is.

They can have Bloomquist. As for the starter, you mean Piniero? I'd probably give him up too -- I'm fully convinced that the rotation's success last year was due to the defense. Moyer's the only one I like at this point. 😉

Yeah, but the M's make an insane amount of money compared to their payroll. If they hadn't signed Ibanez for crazy money, they could've done it easily.

colon - free agent bust.

fielding, it's debatable. The margin of difference between the best fielders in the game is negligeable imo. Sure one may be better then the other when examined down to the last detail, but it plays no bearing in real life.

Hitting, Andruw Jones is a complete joke now. Talk about biggest waste of talent ever. As a Braves fan, I've watched him since he was 19 and became the youngest ever to hit a world series home run. I think he was probably more disciplined at the plate back then compared to his discipline now. Just watching him hit makes me want to scream. I can tell exactly what pitch is coming, and he swings at it every time.

If you're talking about fielding, then yes. Otherwise you are a moron (you're probably a moron anyway).

If you're talking only about fielding, then I wouldn't put Garret Anderson there at all.

#1 for me, when taking into account both fielding and hitting, would be Jim Edmonds for this season.

edmonds is a better fielder but, I don't see how anyone can argue their is a better hitter after seeing him hit that great pitch by tavarez outta the park......come on that was a great pitch...I don't see how he could have placed it any better.

The only guy you could ALMOST put ahead of Beltran is Edmonds, but he is getting older. Beltran has great power and speed and is a very good defensive CF.

One homerun doesn't really decide anything. If you're only talking about this season then Edmonds was far better than Beltran and any other CF.

Wrong for hitting and defense.

For defense it would be:

A. Jones
Hunter
Edmonds
Cameron
Beltran or Wells

Hitting:

Edmonds
Beltran
Jones
Wells
Damon

This isn't based on 2004 alone. I don't consider Anderson a true centerfielder since it's his first year out there and he was injured.

Hunter is a better (and flashier) fielder, but can't hold a candle offensively to Beltran.

Wells has ONE good season, and even if that was the norm he's not up there with Carlos.

GA is Mr. Doubles but takes a huge hit with the arm/glove and wheels.

Andruw Jones is some good on both sides, young but not as good plate discipline.

Edmunds is sic. WIthout his lengthy injury history he might be HOF style. With it, he is a damn fine player. I *might* take him over Beltran for a couple years, but not the next 6-7 years.

If Griffey would have stayed in the Mariners, this question will be a no brainer.

Just about aye? Too bad the carpet in Cincy blew the shyte out of his legs... he would have been a shoo-in for HoF at the rate he was going..

personally, I've always preferred my centre-fielders to be small-ball hitters... hit 300+, steal 30-50, and get 80-100 walks.. HR's and RBI's are just the gravy with an exceptionally good defensive CFer..
