I could go for a grilled cheese sandwich right about now.

But I've never made one at home. The dining hall at school makes a GREAT grilled cheese; they lather butter on one side of each piece of toast, lay the buttered side on the grill, put cheese on top, let it cook, and then hand it to me. Gooey and oh so tasty.

I tried this at home. I buttered up some toast, and put it in a pan on the stove. What happened? It did not cook "fast enough", or rather, the bread was just soggy with butter, not crunchy at all.

Anyone have a tried and true method for making great grilled cheese sandwiches?

A tuna melt sounds nasty. Or tuna in general.

My brother got tuna in his subway sandwich the other day, I advised him not to because I've always thought that it tasted nasty.

Then its too hot. Its really not hard to figure out. You want to hear a sizzle, but it will be obvious if its too hot. Just keep lifting up the sandwich to check to see if its getting there.

As far as the number, every stove is different. I have no idea.

You need to turn up the heat on your pan.

It's numbered to 10. 8? 6?

What if the toast gets burned before the cheese melts?

Get the toast all crispy, and if its not melted yet, turn down heat and cover the pan.

9
set it to 9
and let it heat up a bit before you put the buttered toast on.

if the pan is "steaming" before you put it on, it's too hot and you are burning the teflon off.

Try pretoasting the bread a little bit.

You don't need to pretoast the bread if you're doing it right.

This man speaks the truth.
Butter untoasted bread, stick on grill. Put cheese in. Put another buttered untoasted bread slice on top (butter side up).

Flip once

Consume.

I burned it.

The pan was steaming when I let it heat up, so I took it off, waited a minute, then put it back on with the toast.

Not 1 minute after I put the toast on, I saw a little smoke. Flipped it over and it was burnt. 🙁

This has given me hope for next time though.

Too hot. You have to watch it til you get a feel for the heat and time. Nothing wrong with checking it every 15 seconds the first time.

if you let the pan heat up too much with nothing on it, it will burn quickly. and, the 2nd side finishes much, much faster than the first for some reason (at least when i do it)

off to make myself one right now!

It's really not that hard. Put the pan on medium-low heat to melt the cheese a bit, when you see the cheese has started to become soft and melted, turn it up to medium-high heat to get the bread crunchy. Be sure to use soft butter and spread evenly.

I dunno, I prefer grilled egg and mayonnaise sandwiches. But that's only because I'm lactose intolerant 🙁

So you cover, 15 seconds pass, flip, cover, 15 seconds pass, flip, repeat?

And you use soft, whipped-like butter? I don't have any of that, so I had to use the stick. Luckily the toast was stiff enough that I could softly rub the stick back and forth on it and after a while it was covered in gooeyness.
