I consider myself to be relatively technically competent but memory cards still confuse the hell out of me

I'm buying new memory cards for my camera (D70S) and the g/f's (Canon SD1100 IS).

I currently have an 80x (I think...) 1 GB card that is ~4 years old. At the time I bought it it was a good card, and I paid a lot for it. I know my camera does not support UDMA so the newest cards aren't of much use for me. I would like a big card (16 GB) but only if I don't have to sacrifice speed to get it.

I'm currently looking at these two:

http://www.amazon.com/Transcen...ct-Flash/dp/B000W0BC7I

I found this in a previous post:

The faster Transcend cards seem to score well, but who knows how that translates to the newer 133x line.

I'm sure the SanDisk is faster overall, but 2.5x the money faster? Doubtful. Am I doing myself or my camera a disservice by considering the cheaper card?

The g/f currently has some random Class 6 2 GB card that was available when I bought the camera for her. She decided she wanted it at 9 PM before she flew out so my options were fairly limited.

This one I'm sure is just fine for her camera. She'll love the massive space, and frankly she wouldn't notice the difference if it were slower than what she currently has.

I'm inclined to just order both Transcends, but I always like higher performing parts. If there are better options out there at a reasonable price I am open for suggestions. Cost isn't a huge concern but I know my D70S is no longer a top of the line camera so throwing a top of the line UDMA card at it is a waste.

I would probably just order the Transcends. Your D70s might not be able to take advantage of the extra speed a top of the line card provides nor would you really use, I think, the extra weathersealing and expanded operating temperatures of the Sandisk Extreme series. I also doubt that the newer 133X Transcend would somehow score lower than the older 120X at robgalbraith.

Both cameras are not fast enough to make use of high speed cards. Get the Transcend cards; they are a good value. Frys.com has 133x Kingston 16GB CF cards for $29.99 f/s (or free pickup in Wilsonville) but they're OOS right now. Newegg has the same Kingston card for $31.50 f/s. The Transcend 16GB SDHC card looks like a good deal on Amazon.

Unless you never delete your photos off your memory cards after copying them to a PC, I doubt your 16GB cards will even get half full. Both cameras at their highest quality settings can still put several thousand photos on a 16GB card.

At 16gb, I personally wouldn't trust an entire vacation's worth of photos to a non-sandisk, or lexar card. I don't like buying anything other than SanDisk personally, but that's just me; I'm sure people haven't had any issues with these other brands that haven't been had by sandisk and lexar cards, but peace of mind goes a long way for me.

I haven't looked at prices, but I'd look at SanDisk Ultra IIs for a nice speed to price ratio. The benefit of faster cards isn't just in the camera, but speed transferring 16gb of images by card reader to your computer (assuming your card reader can work with UDMA transfer methods).

Transcends it is.

Maybe if I bought a memory card more often than once every 4 years I wouldn't get so bogged down in details when I need a new one.

Thanks for the help guys.

i just buy new memory cards when the old ones fill up 😀

haven't erased a half decent image in years

i really need to back up my stuff

🙁

I'm too lazy to charge the battery on mine and find out. But I've used an 8GB card in one without a problem.

i just need something off site.

Send it to me and I'll charge it up for you. Return shipping might take a while, though... 😉
