I just hooked up my Sony micro component system to my little 24" Wega. It sounds much better than the TV's speakers, but at a volume level above half (on the stereo) the speakers hiss big time.

Why does this occur? Is there anyway to prevent this?

If it is a hiss and not a hum, then it may just be how much noise there is on the outputs from the tv. If the microsys doesn't normally make this sound on any other source, then the noise is on the outputs from the tv.

If it is a hum, then it is a groundloop.

Sony products are generally of very low quality, this isn't surprising. That being said, it wouldn't hurt to check that no cables run too close to things that could cause interference... AC/DC adapters (those boxy things you plug into the wall) are a common culprit.

RF intererence can come from:
halogen light source
wireless router in the room
active cell phone (or old cell phone)
any other high output light source
high output electrical wires (lol unlikely)

But most likely, due to the proximity to the TV and the TV speakers, that's prolly it.

and like what technokid says, is it really a hiss? shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh or
bbbbmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
or
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (lol)

:)
<--- audio n000b..but i'm an EE major, so i'm not entirely n00bish, but still n00b :)

You got it, slick. The headphone jack. Just thought I'd give it a try.

The Total Harmonic Distortion from the headphone jack may not be too good. It doesn't have to be for headphones. Use the output from a VCR instead.

^ good idea. You can also try increasing the volume setting on the TV, so the shelf system needs a lower volume setting for the same loudness. If the headphone out level is too low, you could be getting as much noise as signal.

No shlt, I forgot the volume controls the headphone output as well. That would take care of your problem right there!
