alcohols, ethers, and ketones all can act as solvents.
isopropyl alcohol (an alcohol), performs similarly to acetone (a ketone)

putting a high percentage solvent on paint sounds like a brilliant idea. :p

it's just that that's what i use rubbing alcohol for.

cleaning sticky stuff, that is. not bodily fluids. usually.

never had a sticky xbox.

as techie on a forum like anandtech i would think you would appreciate my feeling that isopropyl is the ideal cleaner for almost every situation. i use it to clean cpus of thermal paste, other computer parts, my mouse, my phone, my xbox controllers, my tv housing, my speakers, my shelves, etc. many of these things are made of plastic just like the xbox console. i've never ever had a problem with using isopropyl to clean stuff in 10 years. i assume this is because most plastics are dyed as opposed to painted.

i've even cleaned a white xbox 360 with no problem! i've even cleaned the original black xbox with no problem! i'm shocked if they used actual paint on the black xbox 360!

and i clean all my stuff regularly. humans are dirty. we get skin and oils and food on everything. not to mention an xbox that lives near the floor will collect dust and i often use paper towels with a little bit of alcohol to dust

Go ahead and take the rest of that paint off and then just repaint it whatever color you like.

I clean my xbox with a wet rag, sometimes with some Windex. Works fine for me. I don't know what you have on yours...

Hmm... the plastic on the black xbox is dyed black, not painted. The color should definitely not come off.

yeah, lets seem some pics. I got a weird feeling its not quiet as bad as its lead on to be.

However, this now gives you an excuse to hit it with a rattlecan just to get that oozing spraylook.

I don't understand why everyone is making a big joke out of this. If it was me, I'd also use alcohol to clean my xbox. And yes I know it's a solvent, but I would NEVER think that the Xbox 360 is such a piece of crap product with cheap shitty paint that comes off with alcohol. This wouldn't even cross my mind. I am used to the idea that pretty much every single electronic product I ever bought, be it a TV, VCR, stereo or whatever was painted such that the paint would NOT come off due to alcohol use. I suppose I never even thought about these things because it was always so. The very fact that this isn't the case with the 360 is absolutely mind boggling to me. Shows one more time how Microsoft is trying to save money everywhere they possibly can, even on paint. So much for the Elite "Black" Xbox 360. It's really a white/beige one, that was painted black to appeal to customers... Lame beyond belief.

All that aside, we didn't ask the OP where he bought his Xbox. Maybe he bought it on.. Ebay or Craigslist. Get it? Maybe I am wrong for blaming Microsoft here...

i bought the xbox from ebgames... probably my least favourite retailer but i needed the game of the year edition asap and they were the only ones that had it. still it was new in the box and from a "real" retailer, so i don't think it was substandard

i can't get you pics because i sold it on craigslist at a discount (yes i told the buyer about its condition) :-(

haha...I realize alcohol is a good cleaner, but is it really necessary for that? I would only use that for something that needed SERIOUS cleaning, and I would assume that whatever it is might get pretty messed up from it.

nah, i do the samething with windex and those clorox wipes, use them on pretty much everything. isopropyl + windex + clorox cleans pretty much everything in my house and i've never run into any problems that would make me "assume that whatever it is might get pretty messed up"

Since you've already sold the system I guess there's not much to discuss here. None of us know what it looked like, and you haven't told us what you were trying to clean off the system. You know that warning on cleaning products that tells you to test it on a small, inconspicuous area before attempting to clean something? The warning we all ignore? Yeah, this is why it's there.

I don't think the profanity-laced tirade about MS using cheap materials is warranted; we don't know the motivation behind MS's choice of materials. The people who design electronics cases only care about what it looks like, they don't care about practical things like cleanability. That's how we end up with electronics that attract dust like a magnet or get scratched easily. Those practical things aren't part of the specs.

What exactly did you get on the thing that required cleaning with alcohol? I mean it's a console, it just sits on a shelf, how does it get dirty?
